I have a story to tell...

A man was born, lived 100 years, and then died. The end.

You see, my story spanned 100 years but didn't take 100 years to tell because I left out details. Dreams follow the same concept.

For me it varies. I've had dreams that seem to span days and I've had dreams that seem to track pretty tightly with how time passes while awake.

As dolphin said and my own personal experience is it all depends on the level of detail and continuity of the dream. So a dream that doesn't jump around, has a tight plot and lots of detail seems to track like waking life, whereas a dream with less detail and that jumps locations, plots, characters, etc... can seem like it's compressing hours or even days into a very, very short span of time.

Thanks for the clarifications. How can I never thought of this at all? Dumb me. I am surprised that an administrator cared to give response on this topic. Thank you.

I don't think it's as simple as skipping bits. I had an experience when young where I deliberately fainted (don't ask!), but I know I was only out for about 1 second (others witnessed it), but in that time I had a vivid dream where I was on a train station platform watching a train coming in. It seemed to last for at least 2 minutes. What seemed like normal time for me was crammed into about 1 or 2 seconds of real time.
In another experience, which was an LD, I saw someones life, like their life history, sped up at high speed.
Time dilation and contraction in dreams is a fascinating subject!

Well I've always heard dreams always last 2-3 seconds in real life, no matter how long they feel.
For often, when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream. ~Aristotle
