      What the hell is semi-lucid?

People are always talking about being semi-lucid on here. I dont get it? How can there be levels of lucid? You either are or your aren't. You know you are dreaming (lucid) or you don't (non-lucid) Where is the in-between?
I accept that my reality is always a dream so if something changes I know I'm right.

You're right, you either ARE lucid, or aren't. But then again, sometimes you're not very lucid so you don't end up really becoming aware within the dream. You vaguely know you're dreaming but don't act on it. That's called semi-lucid, although the term itself is a bit of a misnomer.

There's different levels between not being lucid and being so lucid, you feel like you're all there in the dream.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

there are all sorts of scales invented like 1-100 to describe the amount of lucidity.

to me though this seems redundant though some people like this sort of categorization.

I generally only have 3 kinds of dreams.

Lucid dreams- I understand I am dreaming and CHOOSE (yes I stop and think of whether or not the dream is interesting enough to continue with and if not I make my own situation) to or not to follow the dream. Even if I follow the dream I will use my knowledge that it is a dream to "cheat" and do things I normally wouldnt be able to do.

Non-lucid with control- (most common) like it says I dont realize im dreaming but I can control the dream. This does have varying degrees of control. Some I can completely warp the enviroment to anything I want and some I just control myself.

Non-lucid without control- Very rare because if I start doing stuff in a dream without consciously thinking about doing it I become lucid.
I accept that my reality is always a dream so if something changes I know I'm right.

Semi-lucid is like: "oh...i'm dreaming, cool." and you do nothing about it, just go with the dream, like you didn't even noticied moments ago that you were dreaming.

I dont see that as semi lucid. I see that as a choice because every time I realize I am dreaming I look at the story of the dream and the content and decide whether or not I want to do anything. Though now that I have some goals for dreams I will be much more likely to decide not to follow the story of the dream.

I don't see it as choice at all. Depending on how lucid you are, you'll be more able to make conscious decisions on your own. If you're not lucid enough, you just shrug it off because you don't realize the full extent of the fact that you're dreaming.

Awareness is always between extreems. One can say that we are always semi-luicid. There are many factors invovled. How many sense systems one is aware of simultaneously, and the clarity of each sense. Then there is the information processing itself--what does each sense have to do with the whole picture, and how we are reacting to the whole picture. Also, our attention is often more than one dimensional, we split attention simultaniously. Awareness is not simply binary or, nor is it linear--it is multidimensional.

Those who speak of going from one dimension to another, are really hair brained about what dimensional existence is.

It would be much easier to define if lucidity and control were the same thing....

When you're semi lucid it's like being woken up in middle of the night. Sure you're technically awake but your not really all there yet.

      Well said.

I have had a semi lucid dream where I knew I was dreaming and in bed. However at the same time I thought that I could actually hurt myself physically, and what I did affected the real world. That is what I would call semi-lucid. And wow that was a pain to type on an iPhone. o_O

imo semi lucid is when I'm aware that it's a dream, but not that some characters are dcs or similar.

A few nights ago I had a lucid dream where I was in a house. I knew it was a dream but I thought that I had traveled to that house and was actually sleeping there. So I started looking for details in the house which I hadn't seen before and I was going to check if they were the in "reality" later.

What would you call it when you are not lucid but you CAN (doesnt mean you do) control everything in the dream. The thought never crosses your mind that it could be a dream but you also know for damn sure it isnt reality?

How can I be so stupid to know it is not one thing yet still not realize that it is the only other possibility. Its like flipping a coin and knowing it isnt tails but having know understanding that it is heads. Sometimes my waking life is like that too I know its not a dream but I dont feel like it is real.
I accept that my reality is always a dream so if something changes I know I'm right.
