The first time I learned lucid dreaming I started out with just one reality check: look at something written, look away, look back, did it change?

I remember I had one dream that got intimidated because I actually did this reality check in my dream, and even though I had no suspicion whatsoever that this was a dream and was like "oh I know this is not a dream, but whatever ... Hey, wait a minute!" That was really cool. But it was a one time incident only, and it was due to my mind just learning to do this RC out of habit just because, and so I did this in my dream just because once, and it worked once.

What worked much better for me in the past was going through life looking for weirdness, and doing this reality check whenever something was weird. Mind you still that one reality check, but it was combined with analyzing stuff around me, and categorizing it into weird versus non-weird. A lot of waking life is weird. But this habbit of looking for weirdness really helped me get lucid in the past, and I expect will help again in the future. The reality check of looking at writing was like a confirmation tool, but the looking for the weird was the primary method for me. Of course, for you something entirely different may work better.
