Possibly got close to sleep paralysis?

Okay last night something amazing happened, and pushed me to join the forums (I had been lurking for quite some time now). Anyway, as background info, I have been trying to get to sleep paralysis for just over a year now, no success unfortunately. So last night I go to bed at 9 and wake up at 3 as usual and lay on my back for as long as I can bear. Like any other time, I just feel really relaxed but nothing ever really comes up except for some wave feelings. After about 40 minutes I just give up like usual and move to the other side of the bed because it is cooler and lay on my side. And that's when it happened.

All of a sudden after 30 seconds or so, I felt these extremely intense flashes of pain (about 2 per second) all over my body, beginning at my feet if I remember correctly. I was pretty excited until my eyes began to slowly open by themselves, and I get scared of what I will see when they are fully opened, and I close them forcefully, and in the blink of a cosmic eye all the feeling is gone and I "wake up" again.

Now, I have a few questions, 1. Was this the onset of sleep paralysis and 2. What caused it to go away? Excitement or me trying to close my eyes because I got scared?

Hey Architect of Eden, welcome to DV!

Wow, you certainly don't need to seek to have sleep paralysis in order to have a lucid dream. There are easier and much more pleasant ways to induce lucid dreams. Do make sure to read about different techniques here:

      Induction Methods and Techniques

Here's also some additional info on sleep paralysis.

Thank you all for the resources, I will look over them.

I was wondering, since all of the procedures that go in to sleep paralysis mandate that one stay completely still, how was I able to almost enter it so quickly after having moved my entire body?

Actually, I'm not quite sure that's SP. Pain flashes? Hmmm...it could be that you have gotten something people refer to as vibrations. We mostly think of these special effects as noise, because they might occur but are not necessary when wilding, same applies to SP.

We also have a great class about wilding if you are interested, it's here:

      WILD

Edit: Oh, something else I forgot to add, but it is actually quite important.

I was pretty excited until my eyes began to slowly open by themselves, and I get scared of what I will see when they are fully opened, and I close them forcefully, and in the blink of a cosmic eye all the feeling is gone and I "wake up" again.
This does sound like you might have transitioned in the dream. However, you were distracted with the thought of SP and the scary stuff. Don't expect scary stuff! Something might be there or not, it can be just your empty room, or something positive can happen, like you can hear cool music coming from somewhere, etc. If it is a dream, your mood and state of mind are affecting it. It is much better to be in a calm, positive and investigative mood. That's what lucid dreaming is about. Be happy and excited and think about what goals you want to achieve in the dream. Good luck!

      Okay, thanks!

If I cover my eyes with a mask or something will I just not see scary entities or will they still be visible in some other way? I feel as if it would help me relax a bit.

If there is something unusual that you see, this most likely means that you are already dreaming. There is no reason to be afraid, because it's just your imagination.

People don't always see scary stuff and it's better not to think about it, better focus on floating, rolling out of your body, doing a reality check and once you've confirmed it is a dream, focus on your dream goals.

Do check out the link on wild classes I posted above as well as the induction techniques link. They explain everything very well.
