      Language

My regular, non-lucid dreams are either in Portuguese or in English, although Portuguese is a bit more common. However, as soon as I get lucid, everything is in English. I truly believe it's because of DV, since this is the only place where I can talk about LD. Whenever I get lucid, my first instinct is to stop walking and ask myself: "what is the task I have to do? THINK LUCAS THE TASK WHAT IS THE TASK!?" and then I speak to my DCs in English and they reply in English too.

Does anybody else go through this as well? I think it's so interesting that "lucid dreaming = English" to me.

Interesting...to me it's the complete opposite: even english characters will talk in Portuguese to me, regardless of me being lucid or not. It's probably because I'm very self-conscious (always talking to myself) and in my head I mostly speak portuguese (but not all the time).

      Nice topic!

I only speak English, but often if I try to really listen to a DC they are speaking some language I do not understand, or gibberish. I can understand what a DC means if I do not focus on actually hearing the words.

As far as dreaming, sometimes I sign using ASL in my dreams. But when I become lucid, everything becomes English.

I even had a dream one time where I was deaf. It was fun, but creepy.

I'm learning Japanese so I've had it pop up in some lucids and non-lucids. In one lucid dream I was wandering around what looked like a little abandoned town square, there were posters up on some stone walls that said "イルミ (Irumi)" which is short for "イルミネーション" which is illumination written in katakana.

It could have been an ad for an illumination festival. Irumi is also a name so it could have been that or my subconscious just randomly put it up. There were some other posters for a public pool but I couldn't remember what they said.

I think you are raising an important point, LucasPotter: In dreams, spoken language does not matter.

If you spoke six languages, I wouldn't be surprised if they all showed up now and then, and likely in a similar symbolic context as your LD'ing in English because DV is in English (which seems a good guess to me as well, BTW). Unlike communication in waking-life, language -- even when in your own thoughts -- runs secondary to direct metaphor and symbolism in dreams, so it makes sense to me that your dreaming mind will summon the language of immediate convenience rather your primary waking-life language.

My dreams, both non-lucid and lucid, are usually a mix of English and German where some characters will speak English while others will speak German. They all understand me no matter what language I speak, though.

My First language is Portuguese, but having lived 9 years in the UK English has become my most dominant language where I dream and think with, the majority of times.

An interesting thing has happened to me twice already though, where I suddenly decided to speak Portuguese in a dream, one lucid the other non-lucid. Both times the DC I was with did not understand what I said and asked me to explain myself in English where they finally understood. I find this extremely bizarre.
