      Music in a Lucid Dream

This is the original quote that gave me my idea from this thread: http://www.dreamviews.com/general-lu...ml#post2130760

Quote Originally Posted by LDman View Post

My idea is that it would be awesome to have your favorite song playing in the background of your LD. In fact, it is my goal to make a song play in my next LD! I figure you could do this a lot of ways. You could sing like LDman did, or you could just think about it/will it to happen, or you could play it on a jukebox, or go to a bar or other venue where you "know" they will play the song. This could be a really fun way to create a happy or interesting LD and to play with dream control.

      My questions to you are:

Have you done this in a dream already? Were you lucid? Were you trying to make it happen? Did it work?

Will you try this in the future?

What song would you choose? (Embed a YouTube video of it!) (Don't worry if it's a cheesy song that you are embarrassed to like, we all have those, heck there is even a thread about it. We won't laugh... too hard! )

How would you choose to make the song play? (Sing, will power, bar... or make up your own!)

Bonus points if you make it happen and report back here!!! Triple bonus points if you actually end up inside the music video!!!

(Bonus points don't really mean anything and are just for your bragging rights.)

I think I might pick Sail by AWOLNATION... but I'm not sure... it would be awesome if I ended up in outer space bc of it!!! But part of me wants to do an anime song and end up in an anime! But I don't think my mind would recall it properly bc I don't know any Asian languages!

In one LD I started listening to music. The sound didn't have a source, it was playing from everywhere. I just sort of willed the music to start playing.
At first I heard Blind Guardian - Precious Jerusalem but this song happened by accident so after a while I changed it to Leonard Cohen - Avalanche.
The amazing thing was that the songs didn't seem to be "wrong", they were, I dare to say, perfectly recreated. If you want to hear an anime song just try it, I believe you don't have to recollect the entire song to hear it in a LD. Let your subconciousness do the work
Next time if I'll be ever successful of LD'ing I think I might listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Bleak, Uncertain, Beautiful

If you want a youtube link to it, sadly I can't post clickable links yet

Have you done this in a dream already? Were you lucid? Were you trying to make it happen? Did it work?

I've had dream soundtracks a couple of times. I wasn't lucid in one of them, and in the other one, it was the soundtrack that got me lucid.

Will you try this in the future?

      Oh heck yeah!

What song would you choose? (Embed a YouTube video of it!) (Don't worry if it's a cheesy song that you are embarrassed to like, we all have those, heck there is even a thread about it. We won't laugh... too hard! )

This would be my first choice. I proclaim that this is the theme song to my life.

Other songs: Bo Rap (Queen), Here Comes the Sun (Beatles), Getting away with Muder (Papa Roach), The Phoenix (Fall out boy), And about two dozen other songs by the people that did the one in the video.

But by far, 'Dream Music' is the best.

How would you choose to make the song play? (Sing, will power, bar... or make up your own!)

Normally dreams that a music play in the background are the ones that make me awake so happy as if I had achieved something great. Too bad on Lucid dreams I feel a bit dizzy or weird, so I normally can't really get focused so much. If I do remember it in a Lucid Dream I will probably try.

No problem, you can just embed videos by catching the url and pasting it in the box given after clicking the little "movie reel" button at the top of the reply box!

Beautiful song by the way! I was a little unsure at first because of all the yelling in the video, lol. But once the music started I was hooked!

As for the anime music, I think I might pick one and listen to it over and over until I feel my subconscious has it memorized!

Nice way to become lucid! I once missed a chance to do this. I was listening to lucid dream induction music while sleeping and heard the music coming from a computer in my dream. I told the person I was with that I liked listening to music while I sleep. I did not catch what I was saying and what it implied!

Oh yea, and... I love the Beatles!!!
If I tried to pick just one of their songs I would spend all day jamming out and getting nowhere, lol.

I like your song too. I listen to a lot of similar music. The beginning reminded me of the music of an artist I know. My friend makes instrumental music. You might like it. His stage name is Ventriloquist Mute. He has a website if you want to Google him. I wonder what kind of trippy dreams I would have if I played his music? His stuff always affects me very deeply. I might have to try that!

I love this thread! I love listening to new music! Music is one of the funnest things to share with someone!

How strange and sad! Do you have inner ear problems? Have you tried switching sleep positions? Maybe just tell yourself in the dream that you are not dizzy! Say something like, "I feel amazing and happy and healthy!"

A while back I was listening to music while trying to WILD and I'm pretty sure I was lucid and i was dancing to the music playing as I was walking. For some reason though I see myself in third person in my dreams so I was watching myself dance as I walked. It was awesome though.

I'm very often in 3rd Person or am an Omniscient Entity in my dreams, but not when lucid. There has only been once when I was not 1st P in a lucid dream and it was only for a split second bc the situation got too dangerous and then I was in another dream, sadly not lucid.
      What song was it?

Holy crap that anime looks awesome!!! I'm definitely watching it next, but first I've already started Toaru Majutsu No Indekkusu.

So, will you be playing this in one of your dreams? Let me know what happens!

      I haven't sadly.

I've played it a few thousands times over in waking life though. Love it with a damn passion.

From my experience with music in lucid dreams, music is entirely phenomenal. Its unlike any other music I have ever heard before and is so creative. The last few times that I heard music in Non-lucid dreams alone, I was mind blown. It was that good, no kidding.
I remember one time I got my ipod out in my lucid dream and played a song, and it was as though I was listening to perfection.

Well if you do then please share it with us. I'm dying to hear about someone's musical adventures, especially someone who was inspired by this thread. That would just be so cool.

That sounds awesome! There is something really fun about being reckless in a LD. A few nights ago I flew very fast the wrong way down a highway and was weaving around cars causing massive pile-ups. It was so exhilarating!

I haven't heard a song in a dream yet, but I can kinda imagine, and yeah, it would be awesome! Music has a strange ability to alter your psyche and if you get the right song at the right time it can be almost orgasmic, like a brain-gasm. I imagine it would be like that in a dream only amplified!

Sadly, I have not been able to hear my song in a dream yet. I've only had 2 LD (I think that's right) since starting this thread and I did not remember to try this in either one. Next time... I hope!

I very much want to fly with this playing in the background:

I'm hoping that when I remember, I can just start singing it, and the band will chime in with me

I tend to hear music fairly often in dreams, and often wake up with whatever the song was. Thing is, most of them are made up, or variations of songs I already know. I woke up with a neat variation of this once:

I immediately got up and hummed it into my voice recorder Also had a morning a few weeks start out with Billie Holiday. Pretty sweet

Very cool. I clicked around on a few other videos by them and realized I know them... kinda. I've heard Champagne Supernova before but never knew the band. I'm gonna have to check out more of their stuff. That's awesome that you hear music all the time in your dreams. I hope I can start doing that!

I did this intentionally in a dream a couple months ago.
      Spoiler for the dream:

I was lucid, but it wasn't a song I've ever heard before outside of the dream. Oh! and once I started the music playing, it kept playing for the entire duration of the dream.
Usually when songs start playing in my dreams they are spontaneous though. I can only seem to remember hearing songs from waking life in dreams when I'm non lucid.

Something that I've noticed lately is that whenever I'm falling asleep, my dreams will almost always start with a song playing in the background. I have experimented with it on a couple of separate occasions now. I wait until I'm starting to see a dream and some song will almost always start playing, then I will wake myself up and wait until another one starts. I repeated that several times to see if it was a new song each time and it was. They're completely original songs as well, I think it's really neat.
I have been thinking about writing some of them down, because I can remember them really well for some reason (something that's unusual for me, because I always have a really hard time remembering the songs that I play or hear in dreams once I wake up).

^ I love that you made music play from the heavens for us!

You guys might be interested in reading Raven Knight's DJ:
Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views - New Dream Adventures of Raven Knight - Dream Journals
She uses music heavily in her LDs, with specific songs unlocking different dream powers.

I hear music playing in the background of my lucid and non-lucid dreams quite often, both real songs and original music.
I occasionally take note, but it's not usually something I pay particular attention to. Perhaps I will in future.
I've tried playing existing songs on various instruments in LDs with varying levels of success. I seem to perform way better with instruments I don't play IWL, whereas I struggle with instruments I do. I don't have a very nice singing voice in dreams either, which is a shame, because I've heard about people (CanisLucidus comes to mind) who have amazing dream-voices!

As for existing songs that I'd like to hear in a future LD...
The first thing that comes to mind is any MIDI sequence from a game, and then I'd try to shift the pitch to see if it would play correctly in another key, or change instruments halfway through the song.

EDIT: I remembered something else I've done in a few dreams!
I used to work as a freelance filmmaker IWL, and some of my early work was making music videos.
I've made a few films in dreams before (lucid and non,) including music videos and films with soundtracks. The most recent one was a semi-lucid dream where I made a music video for Rihanna. She's not an artist I'm a huge fan of IWL, but it was an original song with her voice/style, and I used some cool dream powers to make shapes with electricity to match the sound of her music, like cubic Tesla coils.

Once I started the music playing, it kept playing for the entire duration of the dream.

They're completely original songs as well, I think it's really neat.
This first quote has me so insanely curious!? If it's WL stuff, then I don't want to pry, but if it's referencing another dream then I'd love to read it. It seems like an interesting story.
The fact that the music kept playing is really awesome. Did it keep changing so that it was just a really long song played once, or was it like a shorter song on repeat?
I think it's awesome that you can write original songs in your dreams and remember them. You should definitely record them!

You guys might be interested in reading Raven Knight's DJ. She uses music heavily in her LDs, with specific songs unlocking different dream powers.

I seem to perform way better with instruments I don't play IWL. I don't have a very nice singing voice in dreams either.

As for existing songs that I'd like to hear in a future LD...

Awww... now I'm singing "Dream Lover" in my head.
That sounds like an interesting read, I will definitely have to do that!
I've heard you can improve your playing skills by practicing in a dream though. That's probably why it's harder; because you actually know what you are doing and you are really practicing. Also, do you sing in WL?
Hmmm... I'm not a gamer, but I can see how if you are this would be interesting.
I hate Rihanna, but that sounds like a really cool dream video anyway!

Heee, cute theme song for us dream-lovebirds!

Yeah, I think you're right about the instruments. I know when I'm hitting the wrong keys on a dream-piano, whereas I am like a rock star on dream-guitar, probably because I know nothing about playing guitar IWL so I can't go wrong!

Do I sing? Haha... if anotherdreamer wasn't in this thread, I could get away with saying I have a terrible singing voice and leaving it at that, but he'll waggle his finger at me for that.
I very rarely sing IWL, I'm super shy about it, but I've been coming out of my shell a bit more lately. I wonder if my dream-voice will improve as a result, that will be interesting to see. Maybe I'll try singing in my next lucid dream.

I actually haven't been much of a gamer at all for the past few years, but I think the music used in some older style games is really cool.
It's more the music format I'm interested in though, not the game soundtracks. I'd want to try thinking of the music like a MIDI sequence, which is like digital sheet music that gets played by virtual instruments.
I've been creating some MIDI files in waking life recently, and transposing them into different keys to help people learn easier versions of songs on Synthesia, a piano tutorial program. I'd like to see how well my dreaming mind can edit a song on the fly, like changing the key, tempo, and the sound of individual instruments. Perhaps I could visualise some kind of interface in the dream to mimic a digital music editor.
I can separate music into layers in my head IWL, so I'd be interested to see how much of this crosses over into my dreams!
I'll try to remember to report back if/when I try these things.

Here's a video about MIDI editing since I probably did a bad job of explaining it...

We were just having a conversation the day before about how similar we are and I think I mentioned something about us being like spiritual siblings. Like she was my twin sister that I never knew I had.

It was like one long, continuous song that kept evolving with the emotion and the layout of the scene.

I think it's great that you are opening up and coming out of your shell, especially if you have a talent. You should never hide something that might bring you or another joy!
I'm glad you shared that video too! I looked up what MIDI was when you made your first post and still didn't really get it. Once I saw the video I realized I have actually seen someone making MIDI songs before. I mentioned them earlier in this thread. His stage name is The Ventriloquist Mute. I've sat around watching him and another guy jamming out and then later him editing the sounds on his computer. Very cool!

Oh, I see. That's really awesome that you guys found each other! Thank you for sharing!
It must have been awesome to hear such complex music in your dream!

Well, I have yet to induce a song consciously, however, I have had two songs play in dreams recently. One was non-lucid and the whole dream was just a music video. It was the dumbest freakin' song you've ever heard. Some really, really, really bad pop song. But I was interested because the girls were hot, lol.
The other was in a lucid dream from last night. I was standing on a bridge and staring out at a city when all of a sudden this really beautiful classical/symphonic piece started playing. It was a really gorgeous song. Unfortunately, I was too excited to pay much attention. I only actively listened to it for about 30 seconds. But I know if I could hear it again it would be an instant favorite of mine. I think this happened because I've been listening to so much classical and symphonic music lately in WL. I'm definitely going to have to do this more! In fact... cue Pandora now!

Your friend's music is really interesting, I'm listening to it now.

It's exciting that you've already noticed some dream music!
I'll be sure to check back in this thread to follow your progress.
