It is a process, not a project. You don't learn lucid dreaming like you learn a subject at school. It is a hobby, you don't fully learn a hobby until mastered, and I think every master of hobbies would tell you that they always have a lot to learn.
I had random ones when I was a kid, when the stars aligned (figure of speech). And then I learned about it from a sister. I looked it up online, tried it, got lucid exactly how I was expecting in my first try in a nap. Then promptly forgot (got married like a week later). A year after that, I had a dream that I became lucid in, that reminded me of this awesome hobby. Then I tried to ld for a couple months before getting lucid on purpose. Haha. It has been almost 4 years since I started trying to LD every night, and I get lucid almost every night now, at first it was a couple nights a month, then it was once a weekish, then a couple times a week, and so on. I have had some major set backs in the last few years, like 2 children, loss of jobs, and many trials, but these things are unavoidable in life, so even though I think "I would be much further along if blah blah blah hadn't happened", I know that if it wasn't that, it would have been something else. And the kids are awesome, and being a stay at home dad rocks, so I think that I am better for all of the things I might have said "slowed down my LDing" in the past, because they are a big reason I have what I need to LD now.
You can't make yourself get lucid. You can, however, greatly increase the chances of getting lucid.
No matter how hard you try at the beginning, you can only move the odds up so much at a time. The best way to move up the chances is experience, followed by consistency, followed by moxy. The one common denominator for all three of these is time. How much time is up to you and your past and your choices. If you are someone that has enjoyed dreams their whole life, it will be easier. If you pick a technique with better odds, it will be easier. Expectations can create or kill stress, depending on it which way it is going. So lean towards things that you expect to succeed, while using logical ideas. It won't make it easier to LD, but it will make sure that you don't make it harder on yourself. If a technique stresses you out, it doesn't matter what the odds are, because the odds are killed by stress. Pick things that you can do every single day and enjoy it, because 99% of lding is practice. If you don't love the practice, then you won't enjoy it as a whole.
Hope this isn't an overload of random stuff. I am tired and going to bed. Excited for a night of almost guaranteed LDs. may the odds be ever in your favor.
