You need to do a reality check if you ever have even the slightest suspicion that you are dreaming. I recommend the nose pinch RC. Pinch your nose closed and attempt to breath through it anyway. If you can...you are dreaming (there are others as well). It seems like your mind will do everything it can to keep you from becoming lucid sometimes. It takes practice and experience to become consistent. You could try RCing throughout the day as well, and hopefully it will carry over into your dreams.
