      3D pictures- With no glasses!

These are called stereoscopic 3D images/video. To view these 3d images, slightly cross your eyes until the two pictures become three, and then focus on the center one. On the first one, try to get the circle and square to align in the third picture.

Theres also video too, like this one:

I can cross them far enough from a distance, but then I can't see the images, nor hold them crossed that long. ALthough I don't doubt the principle, that's how these work

For those of you who can't cross your eyes properly, heres a gif for you.

You guys can do it, it just takes a few seconds to get the hang of. Also, you may need to move your head a little to the left or right, forward or back to get it just right but it's pretty neat when you get it to work. ninja...it's really not the same as those magic eye things.

Very trippy. It takes a little work to get your eyes crossed correctly to make it work, but it works! Thanks for posting!

WOOT! It actually worked for me this time (except for Ninja's). I crossed my eyes until I saw three images. If I "focused" on the center image, it became 3-D. The last image was hardest for me to see because I couldn't tell what it was at first lol (I didn't look at the pics ahead of time, just scrolled down).

      Thanks for sharing!

The most impressive pic, for me, is the mountain range

Jeez, I'm experienced at these things, but I can only get the images to overlap about halfway. But these are definitely interesting nonetheless. Guess I should check these out more.

Also, there is a way to look at these such that there is only one image. Take a piece of paper or other flat object and place it at the tip of your nose. Line up the other side along the seam between the images, and focus the image. It works by separating the eyes into seeing individual images that are fused together. Try it for larger images. Fun stuff.

I think some of you might be trying to cross your eyes too much. It isn't a matter of how much you can cross your eyes or get the images to overlap, it's much more subtle then that. Basically you just cross your eyes a little...until the images are overlapping slightly...after that it's more of a change in focal point or perspective. As if you are trying to look "through" the image at a point behind your monitor. Once you get the right position it actually feels quite natural, not as if you are straining or crossing your eyes at all.

Ctrl and + for those who can't get it to go far enough.

Some of the images are too large at standard resolution; so large that your eyes would actually need to be pointing outwards to do it, and not many people have the muscles.

I can do this pretty easily... I used to separate my eyes all the time as a kid; I think I must've first learned how via that trick where you hold your index fingers a bit apart and then make a sphere of flesh appear in the middle. :V

All you have to do is have your eyes facing straight forwards instead of inwards, which is what they do by habit when you're focusing on a distant object. Try focusing on a distant object whilst keeping your concentration on an image in the foreground to get a taste of how to split images.

No...it isn't. When you focus your eyes to see those 3d images posted above, you can just leave your eyes that way and scroll down and see all the images the same...but when you get to the magic eye image that ninja posted...it's wrong. When you look at that magic eye picture in the same way that you see the 3d images, the image is actually overlaid with ninja's avatar and out of focus. Attempting to change perspective to bring into focus just results in the image appearing inverted and looks nothing like what you are "supposed" to see. With the magic eye, you are supposed to see skittles or whatever floating in space in front of the background. But when you focus your eyes on it the same way as you would for the 3d images, then you will see a plane that is the foreground, and the skittles are actually cut out of the foreground plane and move backward in space...like the image becomes reversed. So maybe you aren't seeing the first image that it's supposed to be? You cannot claim that they are exactly the same thing. And if you insist that they are, then you must not be looking at one or the other correctly.

Yes! I finally got these stupid things. (not really)

Aquanina is correct. They are not the same. These stereoscopic ones are taken of the same image, but at a slightly different angle. The same distance as your eyes are apart. Most likely with the new cameras they have that have two "irises"
So that when you cross your eyes and merge them together again, you see it as you would see it IRL.

SO cool. I loved this, thanks Turtle!

FWIW, I had trouble at first too, but I found if I crossed my eyes only slightly, then kind of relaxed into that rather than straining my eyes, it worked like a charm. Every time I tried to "focus" on the middle image I lost my crossed eyes, so don't try to focus on it. Just soften your eyes and relax with your slightly crossed eyes.

      nope.avi

You have to change your focus for all of the images, as they're all different distances apart; the mountain one takes particular effort compared to the sexay one for example because the distance is quite a bit greater. ninja's uses exactly the same principle; it's just that the file format is a lot smaller and hence you need to do a lot less unfocusing. All magic eye pictures do is use a tessellated texture, which hides the original object, and gives you some reference point so you know how far to unfocus. In both cases all that is being done is you are seeing an object or scene from the left in your left eye and from the right in your right eye, and the brain can then perceive the 3D due to binocular vision. That ninja's image uses a plane with stuff in the foreground is totally irrelevant: that's simply the 3D object they chose to represent, and you could just as easily take two photos of a similar scene, or make a magic eye picture without such an object. Here is a magic eye pic with a greater focus distance and more interesting 3 dimensionality to help you understand:

Also an awesome page I just found on the Wiki, complete with animated 3D shark:

Seriously, you described how the first pics work, and then contrasted it with... nothing. Because apparently you don't know how the magic eye pictures work, and if you took a couple of minutes to check it out you'd find that it's the same.

Because I thought it was COMMON SENSE.

Magic eye images don't use two picture taken from a slightly different angle. Didn't think I had to mention that.

How do they? It's one picture.
I can only get the leaf one to slightly work, but it's pretty fucken shit. So I've never experienced these things in action before anyway, but from my understanding
magic eyes have some parts of the image which overlap, which cause the bits that don't overlap to pop out when you merge it together with your eyes.

These stereoscopic ones are taken of the same thing from the angle that your eyes would usually see them IRL. So when they merge you see a "3D" image.
