Ah yes, I've seen that a few days ago.

I don't really have a high opinion on anonymous. They don't seem unified at all to me and appear to largely consist of (youngish) trolls. Some of these "internet hacktivists" (lol) have been involved in rudely spamming facebook pages of recently deceased and their families and making little girls cry. But we'll see... at least with wikileaks they have picked a good cause.

But - I generally welcome the use of the internet as a tool of much needed resistance and protest.

I agree, with anything there's a very visible element of immaturity but it's a completely open invitation, command your own revolution setup so people are going to take it whatever direction they want under the name Anonymous. It shares this quality with Al Queda. In general I agree with their message, the internet is the last bastion of freedom and we must protect it no matter what.

A minor nuisance to people of the real world. These kids are more interested in pretending they have some power and watching reruns of V for Vendetta than exacting any changes on the "injustices" of this world...

I don't think it's very sensible to try and form an opinion on Anonymous. It's not an organization with special members, it's pretty much just anyone who wants to do something anonymously. Say something pops up and an individual thinks it unjust, they spread the word and try to recruit people to help their cause while taking the banner of Anonymous. At the same time, if someone wants to do something just for sake of screwing with people, they'll do the same and recruit like-minded individuals to aid them (like that time they spoiled the ending of a Harry potter novel in a crowded bookstore on the day of it's release xD). With that being said, I don't think you can really classify Anonymous as being one or the other, it's just a bunch of random people coming together for various, unrelated reasons.

As for the Facebook thing, I don't there's ever been a concerted effort behind those... escapades; they're just kids trying to get under people's skin. They may do it anonymously but I wouldn't exactly call it the same thing.

Well, we'll see where this goes. Based on the video, they've at least go the right stuff in mind. I particularly like that they don't really talk specifically about the US - we all need to think a little less about "US, England, China, Russia", etc., and a little more about the world which we all share. I'll be keeping an eye on this, at the very least.

Anyway back on topic, I think what anonymous is doing is great. any idiot can get be hide a proxy and attack people, which makes its a great tool for revolution!

They pretty much admit in the evolution of Anonymous that is started as a bunch of elitist *channers attacking people for the lulz. Things didn't get serious until the demonstrations in Iran where free internet was crucial for the resistance movement. Then the Wikileaks stuff happened and they got all this new media attention.

Edit: Kerest, your posting about anonymous so far leads me to believe your knowledge of them scratches the surface at best so.. it's probably not wise to comment on a group you know nothing about. It's clear you know nothing about them.

I support Anonymous. Eric, granted that they've taken up guy fawkes masks as their choice for facial concealment, I don't think the mask defines the group. Mass movement behind anonymity defines the group and that existed before that film was released.

To add to what Jeff said, they only wear the mask as a way to hide their identity. It also make a good symbol to rally behind. But Anonymous has always had the symbol of a green, featureless man, wearing a suit. The Guy Fawkes masks just happen to be something they can hide their identity with, and has to do with a meme called epic fail guy. Not because they think they are some ideal presented in a dystopian future.

Most of anonymous are talentless 15 year old trolls. The ones crashing security companies and government websites are a small minority, most of whom probably actually work for as security experts. Anonymous is doing good by me by fighting internet censorship and for freedom of the press. Constitution FTW

This.

Because it's decentralized and essentially anybody can become 'anonymous', there are people who generally unimportant things in the name of the concept. But there is kind of actual activist...I wouldn't say core but some kind of minority.

That anonymous is composed MOSTLY of retarded folks works in their favor. Nice meat shield for those doing the real work. And others wont take them seriously in spite of what happens because of them.

Actually, I think it was a 16 year old girl that was a major player in taking down the security website that claimed it was going to take down Anonymous. And two others from what I understand.
