I haven't posted pictures for a while. So here are a couple:

View from my (almost) everyday walk.

Picture from where I live. And if you look close you can match up the buttes on both pictures.

Thanks guys. I'll try to stick my head out of my DJ more often.

These next two aren't exactly an "everyday" view, but I do try to get on the water every chance I get. These were from a two day Colorado River Trip a week and a half ago. And tomorrow I will start a two day Lake kayaking trip, so I'll have more recent pics.

Nobody else's pics can match that!!

It must be absolutely amazing, living amid that kind of grandeur. Does that awesome landscape turn up in your dreams?

Thanks! Yeah, I kayak sometimes in my dreams. And in LDs I like to fly over Lake Powell or the Grand Canyon. Because in real life as I look out over the views I will say, "Okay, I can't fly out over it now, but as soon as I get lucid I will." It's a neat thing to be able to think. Not many people can look out over a view like that and know that soon they will be able to fly over it in a very real feeling way.

I don't know--your house was amazing all tucked down into all those trees. I can't even imagine how that would be to walk out of my house into that. There aren't a lot of trees where I am.

Yeah I know - I am exceptionally lucky with that. This whole area I live in is so beautiful in the same intimate small-scale way. I need to get some more pics when I'm walking the dog soon. Nature is so amazing.

It was uncold enough today to eat an orange on the porch. I haven't had a really good orange yet this year

Q: What is the best thing in life, Taosaur?

T: To peel the orange, to see it squirting away from you, and to taste the sweet-tang of the juices.

With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I'm at the southern end of Illinois - right across the Mississippi from St. Louis. There's actually a lot of flat land not far from here - especially the broad floodplains alongside and near the river and out toward Iowa. But I'm nestled into this little sweet spot where it's all rolling little hills and woods, with the streets cutting over and through it all like those curving little streets at the Zoo. For me the most beautiful time is fall as the leaves fall away and you can see the little clusters of lights rolling off over the hills into the distance.

Here, pictures of my dog Pepper:

My old house, which is just down the street from the new one:

And the tree in the old driveway

All taken at night using long exposure and a tripod. I want to get shots like this of my new house.

Click on any of these to see them on Flickr, then click on the image or click on View All Sizes to see them bigger. You can download the full sized originals of any of my pics.

In front of a neighbor's house - this ivy covers everything around my house it seems

      100_1235 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

Note the little fences - this same stretch of street shows up later in the after dark photos. This is Sherwood Forest, the street I live on.

      100_1239 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

      My helper

      100_1240 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

      Cooperating better here

      100_1242 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

And now the real fun begins. I decided to re-learn how to fiddle with the Shutter Aperture settings and Gain to get some nighttime shots again. I love the way these look!! Really tricky though - you have to carry the camera on a fully-extended 5 foot long tripod - plus I had my little helper leashed to my belt loop. I learned that she can be amazingly well behaved when I'm standing still - I really thought she was going to screw this up but she stood perfectly still until I broke down the tripod each time. I was stunned. Who taught her this? I also learned (re-learned) how weird it feels to walk around my neighborhood at night with a five foot long fully extended tripod and keep setting it up on streetcorners. Nobody actually said anything, but I could imagine everybody in every passing car and looking out their windows thinking I was some kind of peeping tom. Heh, I'd have to be a pretty dumb one to do this so openly, with the LCD screen casting bright light right onto my face as I work!

I'm amazed how good some of these came out - especially after a little creative photoshopping to bring out more detail in the shadows and play with the colors slightly (only slightly). Using a long shutter time makes colors strange and surreal anyway. To me these pics are so much more fun than the usual brightly lit daytime photos.

You MUST look at these in the Flickr viewer! Click on one to go to Flickr, then click on the pic again to see it in the Flickr Viewer against a dark background. Now, click on View All Sizes in the upper right corner and you can view them large or full size and download full size if you want. I think they look best in the viewer. Once there you can click through the pics like a slide show.

Ok, front of my duplex. I live in the right side, the brick half.

The big corner right next to my house.
This one really gets across the sens of how the woods are here - branches intertwine overhead so that most streets are like leafy tunnels with occasional breaks onto open sky.

      Sherwood001 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

These are all pics of the same intersection form different angles/sides. Note the name on the street sign.

      Sherwood002 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

Here you can clearly see the street name.

      Sherwood004 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

      Sherwood005 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

Here's the stretch of road with the fences from before

      Sherwood006 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

And back home again. Yep, it's like living in a little Hobbit Shire.

      Darkduplex003 by Darkmatters, on Flickr

All in all a very adventurous night without going more than 1/4 mile from home, if even that. Especially when the 2 ghetto dudes started walking straight at me and followed me most of the way home. Not a great time to be carrying a camera on a 5 foot long fully extended tripod with my dog leashed to my hip. Very hard to move fast. But nothing came of it. Except for some awesome pictures!

Hahaha! You don't know what city I live in - it's probably the one piece of info I haven't revealed somewhere in here. I'm sure if somebody wanted to hunt me down though it wouldn't be too hard. Guess I better be careful how I write people's characters in my story, eh?
