Different strokes for different folks - that's as much as I can say.

Everyone reacts differently to both - just try each and see what works best with you.

I haven't tried tryptophan yet (other than via a hearty meal), but I recently had to give up my B-complex because it gave me a horrible rash on my neck. B3/Niacin seems to have been the culprit. The rash is finally disappearing and now I take B6 separately, and once my skin has cleared up completly, I will add B12 again.

Not really answering your question, I know, but I just wanted to let you know that high doses of niacin can be problematic.

Regular sleep schedule, dream recall, and intense day work. Supplements (other than the powerhouses like galantine) are just "in the noise" compared to these fundamentals. I've never noticed any consistent dreaming difference from any form of pill/food.

Tryptophan from food like after a nice Thanksgiving dinner seems to knock me out, but really only puts me in a deep sleep. I can't be too sure since I haven't properly experimented with it, but it seems to make my dream recall worse and just put me in a heavy sleep.
