Question Substances which increase REM stage??

Just curious if there are any substances which can effect how much of each stage of sleep we get. Im pretty sure that melatonin and weed both increase N-REM sleep, but is that only because they suppress REM? Also, is there any substance that supresses N-REM so that you subsequently have more REM?

Im asking b/c more REM = more dreams =longer/more LD's

Simple search could get you nice results. Melatonin and 5-HTP are rem supressors, but they will give you REM rebound effect. Simply, you don't get REM in the first half of the night, but later you get longer REM phases.

I think he meant "is there a substance that supresses N-REM" Im curious about this too. Lots of substances block REM but few block the other 3 stages of sleep.

Rem rebound is cool too. the devils grass gives a crazy rebound too...

Galantamine combined with a source of Choline does the trick! It allows your brain to create more acetylcholine than it naturally does. I just tried it for the first time last night and it had a pretty profound effect. However, that is just anecdote and I need to do more testing. Look up galantamine for more information as well as read Ninja9578's lucid aid repository.

I looked around and only found supplements and herbs which make dreams more vivid, I cant find any that force R.E.M. sleep.

There is one pharmaceutical sleeping pill designed to induce REM specifically called orexin-RA-1, but it is still in trial testing.

Some amino acids are turned into 'waking' neurotransmitters like DL-phenylalanine, L-phenylalanine, and tyrosine. These amino acids increase or are made into dopamine and norepinephrine, which modulate wakefulness.

The Rostral Gabaergic neurons of rats have been altered to be light sensitive, when the neurons were activated by lights or lasers they went directly into REM sleep. This has to my knowledge never been done in humans, but who knows
