“We ask the network: ‘Whatever you see there, I want more of it!’ This creates a feedback loop: if a cloud looks a little bit like a bird, the network will make it look more like a bird. This in turn will make the network recognize the bird even more strongly on the next pass and so forth, until a highly detailed bird appears, seemingly out of nowhere.”

Interesting...not sure how effective it's going to be but am rather happy with the image output I got. Looks quite trippy.

It's interesting to find out which properties of the picture, such as colors, level of detail or lack thereof, are the most evocative for this network and compare that to our own way of looking at things, our creative process, and our appreciation for art and aesthetics. For example, the algorithm seems to find familiar shapes in clouds just like we do.

I was starting to wonder if it didn't just turn everything into eyes & faces.

The eyes and the faces appear, because the images that are generated are visualizing the pattern recognition process of the algorithms used in the neural nets: The neural nets basically spit out what they are trained to recognize...
