REM after 7 hours of sleep, 1-5 minutes awake..?

      Hello Dreamers!

Today i keep asking myself a question.. and i am looking for an answer!

Lets say i go to bed at 11.. and wake up (smoothly) at 6..(7 hours of sleep).. and be awake for lets say 1 to 5 minutes, will i enter REM instantly when i fall asleep again?

      Thanks for reading!

      ~Michael

Almost instantly. You still go through some of the NREM - the falling asleep itself, but it's very short. That's why it's so much easier to WILD after at least 4.5 hrs of sleep. The longer sleep the better.

Almost all my LDs happen after 6 hours. I wake up after every REM, and I have more vividness and more awareness after that long as well. I recommend sleeping that long every night, and experimenting with what times you wake up during sleep.

Actually it's not quite that simple. You MAY go straight to REM but you may go into NREM (and that can last for up to half an hour or more). Definitely have a high chance of REM at that point during the night, but it's definitely not a 100% given that you'll enter it directly. Look at this chart for a better idea: sleep_cycle_REM_8_hour_graph.jpg

What after 8 hours of sleep? Lets say i sleep 9 hours.. would the last hour be REM only at the chart?

      Thanks

Each 90 min sleep cycle starts with NREM and ends with REM. At the beginning of sleep, NREM is about 80 min and REM is 10 min. But as you sleep, NREM gets shorter and REM longer, untill after maybe 8 hrs they reverse length. So NREM is about 10 min and REM is 80 min.

Plus, you only go through NREM that's called light sleep just before you hit REM. That light sleep is a stage, when it's very easy to wake someone up and that person will swear, that they were not asleep yet. So yes, it may take you up to 10 min to finish light sleep, but then you go straight to REM. The heavy sleep NREM stage is skipped all together.

That's in a perfect world where human brains work like robots. We're not that straightforward. Virtually every sleep graph you see out there is an approximation of an "average" nights sleep, if you look at a real graph of an average nights sleep recorded directly from an individual, normally they are nothing like the neat ones you see in a science book. 90 minutes is a rough estimate also, not precise or set in stone. Also if your doing manual work or mental work will effect what kind of sleep your brain needs more. I understand what you are saying but I just want to make it clear that we're not machines and each of us sleeps differently.

Not really, it is withing 15 minutes of 90 min. it is at the end of dreams. You wake up then every time anyways, but I wake up for about 5 minutes instead of the normal few seconds all people do.

If you can fall asleep again after 7 hours of sleep, that should be fine. If you aren't successful with this, try to prolong the time you spend awake. Then you should probably wake up earlier to fall asleep well.

Sure. It's anywhere from 90 to 110 min. It can vary among people and even for one person every night. But the average is the best thing we have to go by.

Lots of people use the mantra "I wake up after every REM cycle." I used to use that for a while, but now it is kind of just a choice when I am going to bed when I want to wake up. If I am too tired when I go to sleep I just choose 6 hours of sleep and get up then. It decreases my chances a lot though.

I used a different technique to learn how to wake up at whatever time I want, that is not just the REM cycle ending.

Also, some people drink a ton of water before going to bed and usually wake up after a REM cycle. Then they have to physically get out of bed to go to the bathroom for a few minutes. Maybe that will work for you

It all depends on what stage of sleep you were in. If you were dreaming, but woken up during the dream, you will most likely enter REM fairly quickly. The second you close your eyes, you'll be greeted with HI and odd voices and irrational thoughts. Just try your hardest to stay as aware as possible without staying awake. However, if you weren't dreaming before you woke up, it'll most likely take a bit longer to go into a dream, however it's still possible. Best of luck!
