Almost instantly. You still go through some of the NREM - the falling asleep itself, but it's very short. That's why it's so much easier to WILD after at least 4.5 hrs of sleep. The longer sleep the better. |

Almost all my LDs happen after 6 hours. I wake up after every REM, and I have more vividness and more awareness after that long as well. I recommend sleeping that long every night, and experimenting with what times you wake up during sleep. |

Lots of people use the mantra "I wake up after every REM cycle." I used to use that for a while, but now it is kind of just a choice when I am going to bed when I want to wake up. If I am too tired when I go to sleep I just choose 6 hours of sleep and get up then. It decreases my chances a lot though. |

Actually it's not quite that simple. You MAY go straight to REM but you may go into NREM (and that can last for up to half an hour or more). Definitely have a high chance of REM at that point during the night, but it's definitely not a 100% given that you'll enter it directly. Look at this chart for a better idea: sleep_cycle_REM_8_hour_graph.jpg |

Each 90 min sleep cycle starts with NREM and ends with REM. At the beginning of sleep, NREM is about 80 min and REM is 10 min. But as you sleep, NREM gets shorter and REM longer, untill after maybe 8 hrs they reverse length. So NREM is about 10 min and REM is 80 min. |

If you can fall asleep again after 7 hours of sleep, that should be fine. If you aren't successful with this, try to prolong the time you spend awake. Then you should probably wake up earlier to fall asleep well. |

It all depends on what stage of sleep you were in. If you were dreaming, but woken up during the dream, you will most likely enter REM fairly quickly. The second you close your eyes, you'll be greeted with HI and odd voices and irrational thoughts. Just try your hardest to stay as aware as possible without staying awake. However, if you weren't dreaming before you woke up, it'll most likely take a bit longer to go into a dream, however it's still possible. Best of luck! |
