      I don't think I'm doing WILD right

I'm fairly new to lucid dreaming and I've tried a few methods that are pretty similar to the MILD method of getting your body used to reality checking in the day so you do it in your dreams but this has so far been unsuccessful.
However, I have literally just attempted my first serious WILD and I know you will all say it didn't work because it's my first time or something but it was kinda weird for me so hear me out:

I started out like you're meant to by lying completely still, I had my eyes closed and I resisted any urge to scratch or shift. After a few minutes or so I heard a couple of things, whether it was hallucinations or my family shifting in their sleep I don't know but after that I got a weird sensation sort of like pressure in my head and an ache in my stomach. My heart was beating like really fast because I could feel it pounding against my mattress (I was lying on my front) and it was a little worrying so I shifted myself to send the rollover signal back to my brain and stopped trying to get into the dream. This worked and my heart was beating a little erratically for a few minutes before it settled again. During this I experienced no hypnagogic imagery, just the weird rushing sensation in my head.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this or give me some advice on how best to approach a WILD or any other lucid dreaming technique.

      Cheers

WELL like every other time someone asks for advice on WILD I will recommend reading WILD (Sageous).
Other than that I'd say it seems like it was working and you should have just gone with, especially if you were only a few minutes in.

I take it you can scratch or shift, just as long as you remind yourself to return to what you were doing and ignore what just happened? There are times where I forget about swallowing my saliva, but even the slightest thought gives me the urge to swallow, so I do that and proceed with what I was already doing, going back to being completely oblivious about swallowing my saliva. At times I feel like I'm just consciousness itself without a physical body.

That's the kind of state I'm after I suppose but the closest I got to that was a bit of numbness in my limbs

Still the wrong mindset. WILD is not about what your body is doing, it's about what your mind is doing while you're falling asleep. So when you talk about what to do if you get itchy, that's silly. Do whatever you normally do to fall asleep.

You weren't close. There are many sensations during WILD, but just numbness isn't one of them. Numbness is caused by simply lying awake in one position for too long.

I would say check out both those guides. They both have a lot of great tips.

One of the biggest things is that you shouldn't try it upon initial sleep. Least ways not your first few times. It is easier to get in the right mindset and actually fall asleep. Like Cmind said "its about what your mind is doing while it is falling asleep." Good luck, after reading those you will be very equiped to WILD, all you will lack is experience. Good luck.
