You physically try to do it when you think you are in a dream. You can tell by dream signs (http://www.dreamviews.com/wiki/Dream-Signs-Tutorial) -- If you feel or see something unusual that's when you do it (for example you could find yourself on the moon or in a completely different country or see a flying pig). RCs help determine whether or not you are indeed dreaming whenever you encounter a dream sign.
