What has worked wonders for me, is I guess what could be considered meditation. I will lay down, or lay back, just relax, and I'll go through the relaxation steps I do before sleep each night, then I try to visualize on my own (even though it is best if the visions just come, but I try to stay away from sleep paralysis when I'm doing this since it's usually in the middle of the day). But what I found out, since I'm literally just trying to work on my visualization and not my lucid dreaming, is I'll listen to music while I do this so I won't slip into sleep (again it's the middle of the day and a nap for someone like me would keep me up later), and whatever music I decide on, creates a mood that I associate with it, and I visualize a scene for it.
But the way I start my visualization is with any of my other senses first, then the other and the other, before actually trying to see it. Like I have a "love" music session set up, so I'll put the headphones on, blast the music so I can't hear anything else (sometimes even after the headphones come off) and I imagine smelling the perfume of a woman, then I'll imagine hearing footsteps as we draw near, then I'll imagine feeling the texture of her clothing/skin/hair, then I'll imagine feeling her lips, tasting her tongue, so on and so on, and then before I know it, I can see her and the scene continues to play out, and I'm telling you what happens next.
But I also have a "fight" "hypnotic" and "randomness" music playlists as well, and with each comes a whole different kind of scene to imagine. But after I started doing this, my dreams have not only become a hell of a lot more lifelike, they've grown a HELL of a lot longer. Like the one I had last night, the damn thing took place over like two days it seemed, all the same characters, same plot, same everything, and it was all lifelike and didn't really have any breaks in it. Then again, I think that was the only dream I had, but Jesus it was a long ass dream!
