      climbing the lucid ladder

Hello everyone, my name is Austin. I am new to the dream views community, but have been attempting lucid dreaming for about 2 months now. Since the first day I tried the WBTB technique, I have had 3 successful lucid dreams, the latest of which happened this morning.

I woke up at about 6am out of a dream. The details of this dream are somewhat irrelevant at this point, but if you all would like to hear about it I am more than willing to relay the experience. Once I awoke from this dream, I did a RC, recorded the dream in my journal, and proceeded to meditate for another 20 minutes before returning to sleep. The next thing I noticed was that I woke up and was looking out my window. I was feeling a bit weird, and was questioning some of the things I was seeing outside, so I did an RC and found that I was dreaming. Sadly, i forgot about the dream when I woke up, so I didn't record it immediately. Because of this, I do not have all the details of the dream. The problem, however, was that once I realized I was dreaming, I couldn't control my environment like I desired. I have had a lucid dream where I attained full lucidity and control, but this dream seemed different. I knew I was dreaming and that I could control every aspect of the dream, but for some reason, I just was not able to.

Does anyone have any advice for scaling the levels of lucidity within a dream when you already know you can have full control?

I said "once I awoke from this dream." And, I have already done some pretty extensive research on the topic of dream layers. I'm just having a hard time climbing through them.

Perhaps a stabilization technique would allow you to gain control after you realize you're dreaming and you do that RC. Something to remind you to take control of the dream might help.

Tell yourself you have full control....then take it.

      A mantra perhaps? MILD technique?

Before I went to bed last night I did a bunch of research on this topic and found that most people on this forum have different opinions on what actually lets you control the dream, whether it be entirely based upon belief, or if skill has to do with it. I do not have enough experience with lucid dreaming to pick a side just yet, and I don't necessarily think I will.

melanieb, thanks for the input. At the moment, I just awoke from a dream. It is 7:02am. I am planning on going back to sleep in about 25 minutes. If I succeed in becoming lucid, I will try out your mantra/"believe and you will succeed" technique. I'll get back to you with the results in a few hours.

I have trouble controlling my dreams as well. I've found it's a lot easier to change things I can't see in dreams. Like Covering something with my hand and just knowing that when I move my hand it will change, or changing something behind me that I'm not looking at. I think the whole "Skill" and "Belief" thing have more in common than you think. If you feel like your "skill" is improving, then really your just more confident in your ability to control and therefore have more "belief" that you can change something. I'm not very good at controlling things either, but the two arguments really seem like two sides of the same coin to me

That's a really good idea! I never thought of trying to change things while my view of them is blocked. I will have to try this very soon.

I said I would get back to you guys once i woke up, but sadly I did not attain lucidity this morning. I had a few cool dreams, but none that I became conscious during. I feel like the next time I do become lucid, I am going to have a lot of new things to try!

From what I've read stabilization can help, maybe in your dream if you try to imagine roots like that of a tree sprouting from your feet into the ground, anchoring you into a lucid dream. I've only had a couple of LD's but in theory it sounds like it would work well. Maybe even try using spells for certain situations, like someone mentioned to me. Here's a link to a post with various spells for various things in dreams. http://www.dreamviews.com/f14/using-...e-list-115795/
