It's because you are actively using your brain/concentrating on something. The key is to start visualizing yourself and then let the mind take over. The tricky part is staying just aware enough that you don't drift off to sleep. Instead, you have to be like a silent observer--not judging what you're seeing or even thinking about it, just seeing. Eventually (at least in my case) if I am successful, I will be barely conscious watching what looks like a movie of a dream right behind my eyelids, and then after a certain point I just know that I can step in, and then I have successfully transitioned into a dream. From there I just have to stabilize (that's the part that gets me most often, most stabilization techniques don't work well for me). |

You are paying too much attention to your visualization. What you want is the same sensation as when you fall into a day-dream. What you are trying to do is fall asleep with lucid dreaming on your mind, if visualization is stopping you from falling asleep then you are probably trying to hard. |

I have to say that this is a very helpful post. I never thought about letting my mind wandering about lucid dreaming, although it probably does |

Check your memory, did any suprising event happpen ? does the present make sense ? visualize what you will do when lucid, and how. Reality check as reminder of your intention to lucid dream tonight. Sleep as good as you can; when going to sleep, relax and invite whatever comes with curiosity. Grab your dream journal immediately as you awake and write everything you can recall (if only when you wake up for good). Keep calm, positive and persistent, and don't forget to have fun along the way
