I think general mindfulness/paying attention during waking life is the best route. For one thing, it's not artificial/exhausting like ADA: you're paying attention to your life, which brings great joy and enhances both the waking and the dreaming state. Yes for dreaming you do want to keep a subtext to your awareness that you want to recognize the dream state, but that's not something I find hard to do. As an added benefit really paying attention to waking life makes your dreaming in general become very present and vivid.
