    Lucid #170: Spellcasting 101

I'm standing in what looks like a hotel room with a spellcaster, a brown-haired girl in her late teens or early twenties. She's holding her palms out in front of her, and a miniature tornado whirls and dances in each of her hands. Each cyclone is about a foot high and spins rapidly but quietly, the tip of the funnel stuck to the same spot on her palms. This trick is new to her and she darts her eyes at me as if to say, "Did I get it right?" I nod approvingly.

For some reason, a flame catches around the upper rim of each tornado and she starts to lose her calm. "Why's it doing that?" The flame begins to spread down the funnel and she starts to panic.
I become lucid as the fire spreads down the tornado and wraps ribbons of flame around her arms. I can see that the flames are just wrapping around her, though, and she's not actually catching on fire. It looks like some kind of fire spell is building up that she doesn't understand how to operate or control.

There's a door just behind me that looks like it leads down to a basement. I usher her toward the basement, saying, "Let's go downstairs to practice that. It'll be safer there." She's starting to panic but she starts moving toward the basement as
    the dream ends.

I hold on for DEILD, imagining myself running down a dark flight of stairs. It takes a moment for the imagery to coalesce again, and when I emerge back in a dream, I'm alone in a different hotel room, running around the room. I'm sort of prancing around on the carpet using just the balls of my feet. It's very dainty-looking and super un-macho but the sensation on my feet's very vivid and is helping me keep fears of an unstable dream at bay. (I know to ignore these, but there they were anyway!)

I run around the room like this for a bit more and then switch to rubbing my hands together. I continue this pretty much throughout the rest of the dream.

I walk out through the hotel room door into a darkly-carpeted hallway and walk for a long way. On my right I see a door that looks just like the one that led to the basement in the previous dream, so I follow it, expecting to find the young spellcaster again. I tromp down a flight of wooden stairs into a well-lit anteroom where an Hispanic woman in her late 30s is sitting behind an old-style cash register. She gives me a friendly smile and I remember the Task of the month to ask a DC for a gift.

"Hey!" I say. "Go ahead and give me my gift now." She nods, reaches under her desk, and pulls out a greeting card in an envelope. I will the greeting card to be open and the envelope just sort of vanishes. The cover of the card is some kind of abstract painting and the inside just has some simple handwriting in pen that read: "THANK YOU FOR THE CARD!" I'm trying to process what this means when
    the dream ends.

      Congratulations on the LD CL.

I like how you managed to hold for the DEILD and of course getting the TOTM with confidence and some style.

Nice! Congrats on Totm and the lds!

The beginning of the ld was super cool too! So you are taking sorcery lessons? Got to teach me how to do those spells!

Thanks, you two! It's been a little bit since I've done a clean DEILD. (Using DEILD attempts as an excuse to fall asleep without DJing doesn't count, ha ha...) So I was pleased that the majority of the LD experience had come from DEILD.

Ha ha, thanks! What was even crazier was that I seemed to be trying to give lessons... not sure what made me think that I knew anything about spellcasting. (Especially since the girl was the one doing 100% of the actual magic!)

I'm with you... spells would be a great tool to have! For some reason I don't do many spell-like things beyond force-pushing, but what would be wrong with going full Harry Potter and using that schema to make cool stuff happen in the dream? Gotta use this smilie again:

How would you have helped her practice? Just with the control or do you have thoughts as to why she's the way she is?

Congrats CL!! I missed your DJ post until now. I like the way you got your visualization going for the DEILD...very smooth! Stairs and ladders seem useful for this. Had a spiral staircase once in a transition going down it walking backwards for some reason and it wasn't something I thought to do... My weekend was all about a little laziness and two almost WILDs - falling into an FA the first night and falling into something like an FA/HH the 2nd night. I had a thought on the card thanking you for a card...perhaps sometimes we send out cards with little more purpose than because that person sends us a card or because it has become rote.

I think my plan was to just get her someplace a little more fireproof so that she'd be more able to use something like a fire spell. I had this vision of the basement below us as being made entirely of stone, so it seemed like a good place for her to just go nuts with something fire-based in (relative) safety. I wish I'd thought more about why she had these abilities, because I'm really not sure. Even though I seemed to be in some way guiding her, I'm not sure I had any abilities of my own. Apart from prancing around on carpet and opening greeting cards using nothing but the power of my mind.

Oh yeah, that spiral staircase sounds like a perfect way to transition, for sure. That's something that's easy for your mind to envision going on and on and on, just like you need. Seems like a good interpretation on the card! I'm wide open to ideas because I'm certainly not sure myself, although I was certainly amused by it. I thought it might have something to do with me thanking my subconscious for the gift but... my "subconscious" is really just me. Thus the recursiveness of the card having a message thanking me for itself, heh heh... But your interpretation makes a lot more sense, particularly as holiday greeting card season arrives! You do start playing that game of, "Oh, but they sent us one last year!", you know?

Nice idea for the occasion, thoughtful too. It does appear she came to you for guidance; sometimes the most powerful way of guiding someone is just by being present and providing a safe environment for discovery. As far as your own powers, yours might not be as flashy (in regards to the other dreams you've written so far) but there's one thing you do very well. You keep an open mind.

Thank you, Belle, I really appreciate that! Having been wrong about virtually everything in lucid dreaming at one time or another, an open-minded state is probably the only one in which I can hope to make progress!

You should have tried your hand at spellcasting. I've always wanted to do that.

Yes, I agree! Spellcasting seems like a perfect set of schema for lucid dreaming. I can't think of any more familiar way to do things which are completely impossible in waking life but we've seen time and again in Harry Potter movies.

You and I have both naturally done a lot of force-pushing. Same thing! You see it a bit, your mind mulls it over, accepts it as a reasonable schema to apply in a dream, and you're all set!
