If I may ask, why is it limited to 15 minutes per session? |

Sorry, I should have clarified; if you have already been practicing meditation for a fair amount of time, feel free to go for as long as you think is right. The reason beginners should start with 15 minutes max is because longer periods of meditation have been known to strain the mind for some people who haven't meditated before. So it's best to build up from 15 minutes to longer periods, rather than jump straight into the deep end, so to speak. |

I wonder if you can actually clear your mind of ALL thoughts when doing void meditation. I can't imagine having completely no thoughts :O |

"We are what we think. Everything, what we are, is created by our thoughts. With our thoughts we form the world." -Buddha
"Not the human who has everything is happy, but the one who needs the least. The one who is happy with nothing, possesses everything." -Diogenes
"When in the body of a donkey, enjoy the taste of grass." -Tibetan Saying
It's not clearing your mind of all thoughts, but it isn't ignoring them all either. Essentially, void meditation is similar to when you are falling asleep, and when you are in non-REM sleep. After 'sorting' through all the thoughts that you would normally sort through while you are going to sleep, less and less thoughts will surface in your mind. I'm not sure if it's because no thoughts are entering your mind any more, or because your mind is subconsciously ignoring them or something. |

What would you call a 'deep' state of meditation? |
|
Personally i think dreaming (lucid or non lucid) is a form of deep meditation. Your essentially seperating your awareness from your physical body and moving it else where. There are also parallels between the breathing and relaxation when sleeping and practicing deep meditation. The trick is to be fully conscious when your in a deep meditative state. namaste |

"when you fall unconscious, what your mind expresses is a dream.
When you are aware, what your mind expresses is creativity. It creates your life.
When you are in a higher state of consciousness, it not only creates the life of whatever you want, but also on whom ever you want". -LifeBlissFoundation
That's an interesting take on dreaming and meditation. Certainly, it's likely that void meditation puts you into a state similar to non-REM sleep, and maybe focal meditation into a state similar to REM sleep. I don't know what to make of the possibility of it being the other way around. (You've got me thinking now!) |
