A Game of Thrones - HBO

Anyone read George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire? No? Then you probably won't care. But I've never been more excited for any movie/TV thing in my life. I must have watched every trailer and interview I can find about it, multiple times.

The first book in the series is being made into a HBO series which is beginning next month. This is the best book series I've ever read, with complex character and plot so intricate and real and respectable I hesitate to call it fantasy. HBO doesn't seem to be screwing it up so far. In fact, it looks amazing. (With Sean Bean, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, some more I'm not sure about.)

There are a few amazing trailers. To choose just one...

For anyone who's interested, I can't leave this trailer out.

I saw a few other trailers on television and I thought it looked really interesting. I didn't realize it was based off a book series.

Not that anyone but me cares, but there's a 15 min preview out early. It seems like the first 15 minutes of the first episode. I'm worried it's too character-centered and slow for the average viewer expecting some action-packed LOTR thing, but I like it. I just hope the show doesn't fail. Is there really no one but me who has read this series?

Yeah, I'm pretty much counting down the days. I watched the preview last night and thought it looked pretty good. I think there's a lot of potential for this to be a really good series. The books are so much different from most other fantasy stories and so full of twists and turns. I hope they are able to retain the complexity of the characters in the script.

The first episode aired today! It was great, alhough there was A LOT of sex. It was kind of rediculous. I think I saw more breasts than I've seen my entire life. I think now after watching the first episode that it will be entertaining even for those who haven't read the books. But it's the kind of think you need to watch from the beginning.

I've read it, but didn't really like it. >_>; [First 1.5 books, that is.]

Amazing writing talent. Just not for me. May check this out anyway.

They've got it on in Australia too, soon anyway. Although our channels are starting to make their own versions of adds for things, that fits in the shitty style of their channel, and it makes everything look really shit. But sometimes I forget that and I saw an ad for this and thought it looks retarded. But since you've recommended it, I will watch it when it airs and tell you what I think.

Yes! I also read it and was waiting for the show to come out.

The sex...well, I didn't mind so much, lol. I'll justify that away as being integral to the tone of characters and cultures in the book. I was disappointed in the scene with "no"...they didn't capture the depth in him that the book hinted at in that scene.

Oh well, that was the only real glitch I can see. The show was very well done - beautiful to watch, great casting, very good acting and directing, and with a hell of a backbone to the story, of course. And what a fascinating intro!

I want more of Tyrion now.

Was anyone else bothered by the cinematography? It looked like it was shot on video and reminded me of the way a soap opera looks. Maybe it was just because I was watching on my friend's giant HD TV. I'm going to try watching it again on my crappier television and see if I have the same impression. I was so distracted by this I couldn't pay attention to anything else. So I don't really have any other review of the show.

Okay. It's worth watching the first episode in case you like it so you don't miss out.

I didn't mind it either. I'm just glad I didn't watch it with my dad as almost happened (he ended up having to go to some opera with my mom), because that would have been awkward. The only problem with the sex, for me, was that it took away some of the believability. Some of them, like the last scene, were needed for the plot. And others like the Tyrion one I guess you could argue was needed to establish Tyrion's character. But the first Danaerys scene? I think I laughed there because it was such an obvious excuse to show her naked, as though they won't get plenty of opportunities for that in situations that make more sense. I also noticed the specific sexual acts were changed from what they were in the book.

It's interesting that you say that, because I was kind of astounded by the depth and caring I felt from him there. I didn't remember the specific "no" dialog from the book, so I didn't expect it.

Agreed, and yeah, I didn't expect that intro. It was a bit strange but I liked it.

Who doesn't! I went out of those books with Tyrion as my favorite character, thinking the preference would be close to unique because most people would have a bias and choose some sexy character like Dany as a favorite. I was very wrong. I loved the Jon-Tyrion interaction. (I liked a lot of the characters' interactions, like the Catelyn-Cersei one).

I didn't notice at all and can't remember what it was like, so I guess it didn't bother me. I'll pay attention to it next time.

I liked it, but they defiantly overdid the prologue, I feel like they just wanted to show some blood. I thought in the book when Royce fought the cold one alone and was killed, then Royce strangling Will when he climbed down the tree he was scouting from would have had a darker feel than what happened in the show.

And then there was the plot hole with Jon and Tyrion having there talk, and Jon not being aloud for the feast even though he was supposed to sit at a lower table for "someone" to see him since that part was used in the 3rd book.

Also the twincest wasn't doggy style in the book, Jaime was supposed to have her up against the wall. But with that scene I liked the "The things I do for love" and the *push*

My favorite part had to be the "let all 40,000 and their horses fuck you to get back my throne" thing

      "twincest" lol
Yeah, I noticed that. And the Dany and Drogo scene didn't exactly go as described in the book either. I liked the *push* scene also. It was adequately startling to those who haven't read the books. I walked into the room while my parents were watching it (recorded) during that part (dad's read the books, mom hasn't), and my mom gasped and was like "no!" Then she was begging my dad to tell her what happens next. It's nice to hear the reactions of people who haven't read the books. I find it impossible to watch it from that perspective, so I can't tell how good it is to an outside viewer. It's like when you love someone, and they look good to you no matter what, so it's impossible to judge their appearance from an unbiased perspective.

Something that also makes it hard for people who haven't read the book is how quietly some of the lines are spoken, or when they are spoken too fast.

I watched it twice last night, and the second time I was able to understand every line but one (even with focusing on understanding it was still pretty hard)

And if you haven't read the book some of those phrases are complete gibberish without a deeper understanding of the characters.

I guess. There were a few lines I didn't understand the firt time too. Does anyone know what Cersei says to Catelyn at the feast, at the end of the line, "Your daughter will do well in _____". It sounds like she's saying "captive" but that wouldn't make sense.

I didn't notice that quality, my guess is it was the HDTV.

LOL, yeah...I watched it with my mom, which was probably quite a bit more comfortable than if I had with my dad.

Agreed that it wasn't necessary, they could have just had her brother do one of his painful nipple tweaks or something to show the sexuality underlying their relationship.

There was some subtle and beautiful depth and caring from him in that scene, I do agree. In the book he said "no" like a question until she was ready and she said "yes". I missed that aspect of their interaction.

Yeah, Jon and Tyrion are great fun to watch together! I do like the sexy character, Dany, as well as Arya. An ode to the different and strong, I suppose.

Here here for doggy style inaccuracies! "Twincest" made me laugh too.

Yeah, the timing and tone of the *push* part was pretty perfect.

Already? Only one episode has been aired! HBO's subscribers must have doubled or something. Still, I'd expect they'd need to wait at least until after the second episode to see if the first episode was good enough to bring people back for more. Anyway, I'm very happy about this.

I thought the intro was strange at first, but the more I watch it, the more I like it, and the music.

I think the intro is more... don't know what to call it, the fact that it doesn't show any people makes it feel... more?

Can't describe it, but I like it and the originality.

Thanks for posting the intro video. I like how it encourages a meta-awareness perspective for the viewer. It has a bit of an old, traditional feel (like older well-made, functional toys).

WTF they just said Rickon was 6 in the new episode... Well I guess you can't really have a 3 year old for the part but three and 6 are a big difference.

Yeah, but all of the children are older. (I was surprised Sansa said she was 13, since that's only a year older than she was in the books at that time. The actress looks much older.) Bran is 10, but in the books he was 7 I think.
