I agree with everything but special and important. |
Didn't mean in practice, meant in principle. |
Have you noticed that people are still having sex? |
.. but then we wouldn't be human anymore!! Without all our weird hangups about sex things would get pretty boring. |
A few of those things would depend on what type of sex each person is into. To many people, specific fetishes are "gross" and they'll treat them as gross. Same thing with "degrading" and many others. |
Well, considering you are able to reproduce far before the age of 18, not to mention are about 5 times as horny, I don't see why it's 18+ either. It might not be smart or responsible, but saying that it's not right for anyone below the age of 18 to have sex or for it to be illegal before that age is pretty arbitrary. |
And isn't the same everywhere. In Norway the legal age is 16, in Sweeden it's 15, and so it varies all over the world. Also, in sex ed. in my school they didn't try to discourage people under 16 from having sex, they just said that both people involved should be on the same side of the limit. And stressed the importance of contraceptives. And then proceeded to hand out condoms. I guess we're kinda liberal. |

April Ryan is my friend,
Every sorrow she can mend.
When i visit her dark realm,
Does it simply overwhelm.
^^ Why is it that so many Northern European countries seem to be the most liberal and most humanistic? (not that anybody actually knows) |
In my state (Indiana), the age of consent is 16. You have still federally committed statutory rape, but the state won't do shit about it. I'm not exactly sure this is such a liberal view, Indiana is a conservative state... very conservative. Perhaps it's more of a libertarian view, I see it more as a "none of the government's business" thing than a humanistic thing. |
Let's keep 18+ |
^ Mhm, heard 'dat.
They lucked out. The powers that be (almost?) always end up shaping the socio-political views of of their respective regions, and everything else falls into place from there on out. In Sweden, open-minded realists rose to power and got their message out quicker than the close-minded politicians. America had a stroke of bad luck and the close-minded idealists happened to rise to power, and now it's gfbidsabgdkfbgk. |

A better system would probably be an age range for each age. Sex between one person a day under 16 and another a day over being illegal doesn't make any sense. Neither does a law which is tacitly and ubiquitously ignored by the courts when neither party exceeds 16. |
Part of me feels like no matter how old I get, I'll still feel pervy in front of a really hot 16 year old girl |
Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.
Because there is an issue about the nature of consent. A toddler does not have the ability to make autonomous decisions, but most 18-year-olds do. So presumably there is a point somewhere in between where there is a transition from one state to the other. |
But can't we presume that someone becomes capable of consent before they're 18? I believe you can sign up for the military at 17, so how is it you can consent to die for your country but not to have sex? And besides, what you're talking about, with age levels, has nothing to do with consent. The same level of consent is required to have sex with a 20 year old as a 45 year old. |

I see your Socrates and raise you a Nietzsche. |

I took German for five years, don't fret; I know my ies from my eis... bearing in mind after all who it is that you're talking to. |
I'm still waiting to see a proper argument whereby consent is not real until 18 |
