Hey man, I have been going at lucid dreaming for years and have only managed a handful. It took me over a year to get my first, so I can relate. As the others said, don't give up! It isn't just about the technique, screw the techniques, it is about the mindset and the kind of effort put into it! If you have doubts you are going to become lucid, then of course it won't happen! Try to get excited over it again, I am sure after 2 years that excitement has turned into frustration which doesn't help your cause. Perhaps it is best for you to take a 2 week breather and give up, but come back afterwards!
In regards to techniques, the one thing I think is really necessary is a dream journal. You need to do it every morning no matter how much (or little) you remember. Don't do it on the computer, don't do a recording, writing it by hand in a nice, special journal with a cool design is the best idea until you raise your recall. Don't just write it to get it over with, have fun with it, remember the details and excitement in the dream! Draw little pictures by interesting parts to try and portray what it was like. If you have someone that is willing, share your dreams with them in full detail! Their excitement will help boost your motivation, much like a reward saying "You are doing good! Keep going!"
Also, don't get lost in "Every non-lucid is a waste of time." One thing I learned is that it is best to appreciate every dream, enjoy them. Sure you weren't lucid, bummer try next time, but you still have this awesome experience to look back on (or at least you will when your recall goes up). Even one large chunk of a good dream can be an incredible motivator.
Also, set aside one morning of the week just to sleep in as long as you need to have lots of dreams. If you already get alot of sleep, or aren't active, this isn't a good idea, but otherwise go for it! This doesn't mean you can't have lucid dreams on the other days, this day is simply set apart for am extra big dose.
If you just can't get your motivation up, watch a dream-related movie or read a dream-related book/story, or at least one that in some way reminds you of them. While reading/watching put yourself in their shoes and try to really experience it as if that was YOUR dream that was recorded. This never fails to boost your excitement at least a little. If you can't find any good movies or books regarding dreams, (and I don't mean educational books or documentaries, I mean fun story books, novels, adventure movies) search for someone on the forum who has lots of lucids and look through a few of their more exciting ones.
You can do it mate! It is all in your mind, forget the techniques, if you fail you fail! Your main goal and purpose should be to have fun with it. Much like a sport, if you aren't having fun while learning, you won't have the motivation nor effort put into it and you just won't do well in it. If you aren't having fun trying to lucid dream, well there goes any hope of success! Play a game with your subconscious, ok so your subconscious has 2 years on you, but just wait until you are the lucid master! Hah, then you can show it just how much you really are in control.
I hope to see you back on the forums, we are always here for support! You can do it!
