Induced LD through SP last night for the first time

      Hey, I'm new here.

I randomly got SP a few nights ago except I was lying on my stomach, and I didn't really know much about it. I searched around the internet, basically "lying in bed, cannot move or talk" and eventually I came up on something called Sleep Paralysis.

      I'm 14, by the way.

I was fascinated by the stories people told about "shadow people" and other creatures, usually donning bloody faces and long, greasy hair. Screaming at them, I would suppose, during sleep paralysis. However, during most of these stories, people were lying on their back, and not their stomach. Still not sure of why this is.

Anyway, I also read that you can induce lucid dreaming through SP. I read up on it a lot, and tried it last night and I got it on the first go. I relaxed completely, did the deep breathing on my back etc. Eventually I started to feel weightless in parts of my body.

Then my vision started to shift and morph like a terrifying kaleidoscope, and I could hear whispers and wind, and static noise. It seemed as though I could open my eyes if I wanted to, but I remembered my "researching" and it advised that I shouldn't, unless I want to see the shadow people and all that. It was getting pretty intense and it didn't show any signs of letting up, so I remembered that if I wanted to get out of SP, I should break my breathing pattern and wiggle my fingers. I did both of these in quick succession, and the kaleidoscope started to fade.

From there I knew I could get out of it if I wanted to, so I just went with it. Eventually my vision started to tunnel and I dropped down out of a "pipe" and into the dream world, and into the middle of a standoff between armed robbers and a gigantic police force.

Needless to say I was lucid from there. I must have did it right?

Basically I wanted to ask if my method of LDing was practical, and did anybody else get the kaleidoscope effect with the whispers and the colours and the loud static noise during SP?

      Cheers.

      -Ray

You did it right. You got yourself a lucid dream, congrats!

But you didn't go through SP. It's a common misconception we here at DV are trying hard to get rid of.

All those sensations you felt were normal signs of falling asleep, also called hypnagogic hallucination.

SP on the other hand, is something our body starts after we start dreaming, so we don't act out our dreams. It can not be induced at will. Happy dreams, and welcome to Dreamviews!

      Congrats on lucid dream!
And what gab said, this doesn't sounds like SP. SP is a rare medical condition that only small amount of people experience, that is not related to lucid dreaming in any way and it's not possible to induce it. As for experiencing HH effects, those vary from person to person.

Thanks, guys- and I indeed wondered about SP being listed as a medical condition in multiple readings. I kind of thought that you couldn't induce a disorder like that.

But are the results the same? If you were to both induce HH and experience SP, would you feel the same way? As in, a lingering danger, even if you don't see any of the frightening images when you choose to open your eyes? Unable to move or talk? Sorry if I'm being ignorant; as Scionox said, the experiences vary from person to person.

I would enjoy "opening my eyes" when I go for it the second time tonight, but I'm not sure if I would enter a LD the same way, or if I would even enter a LD. Would I enter a LD, or would I just piss myself in fright during the HHs and then wake up? Because I was frightened by the whispers and the lights with my eyes closed... didn't even have my eyes open!

I would say, keep your eyes closed, fill your mind with pleasant thoughts. Maybe with some cool beach, or some nice place you want to visit in your dream. The likelyhood of something scary happening is much much lover, if you are not scared going into the experience.

The wind, and sounds, whispers, sensations of movement - it really depends on a person if you get scared by that or not. IWL, I'm a huge scaredy cat. But when I experienced most of my HH, it was so interesting, that for some reason I didn't get scared at all. And by then, I'm so far gone, that I know just a few seconds and I'm in LD.

HH by themselves are fascinating. But before you start exploring those, maybe you could get some more experience. So you know nothing can hurt you and you will go into next attempts with more confidence.

There is a lot of crazy information floating around the web about lucid dreaming and SP, so we've had to answer quite a few questions about it and dispel fears.

HH and HI are normal sensations/experiences, though they differ from person to person, and are very unlike SP. Some people may not even experience the hallucinations and sensations very much at all. SP, on the other hand, can be traumatic, particularly when you're not acquainted with it. People without a sleep disorder rarely have incidents of SP, perhaps a couple events in an entire lifetime if at all. It's not a part of lucid dreaming, and even Stephen LaBerge (the LD researcher) only mentioned that it could be "possibly" used to induce a lucid dream on one occasion and in an off-hand manner. Somehow the rumors about SP and lucid dreaming exploded all over the internet, probably when people confused it with REM Atonia and somehow mixed up the scary experience with common Hypnagogic Hallucinations.

The only factor determining what you experience will be your own mind and personal anxiety levels. If you're not normally an anxious person you should be able to have the experiences of HH and HI without any feelings of "lingering danger" or any other negative emotion. We would all be glad to hear you had another lucid dream.

Remember that not every tutorial uses the phrase "open your eyes" properly, and the wording can be confusing. Opening your eyes before you fall asleep (meaning not yet in a dream-state) might cause you to wake up instead. If you do open your eyes during HH it's unlikely you will piss yourself or have any other issues, but if you feel anxious you may want to spend some time reassuring yourself that all you are doing is attempting awareness in a dream, and it's such a normal and common thing that it has been explored and written about for thousands of years. If those old dead guys like Hippocrates could do it...so can you.

Overall best advice: just relax and enjoy a nice dream.
