Lament: Never want to DJ in the mornings

      Hello, all.

I think since day one, the most difficult thing for me to do in my efforts to lucid dream was... journaling.
I commonly have dream control, I have on a few occasions attained lucidity, and I looooove the memories of the dreams I have had - whether lucid or not!
      I love my dreams.

Now, why... why is it that I wake in the morning, and only the most utterly rapturous of dreams imaginable can motivate me to write them down?? For nearly every dream I have had -lucid or not- I have awoken titillated and yet still entirely not in the mood to write it down.

I recognize that journaling is the bedrock foundation for understanding one's dreams and sleeping sensibilities. It enhances and grows one's dream recall (and I have managed to flat-out forget one of my few lucid dreams - damn!) and is, at least for me, indispensable to dreaming and attaining lucid status.

So why, friends... why do I never want to journal when I wake?

I also struggle with finding the motivation to journal, despite loving my dreams and wanting to write them down. I find this is because I generally feel that the reward of writing down the dreams is not worth the cost in comfort.

You could try to do an audio recording journaling, just a thought.

I have this problem too Seems to take a crazy amount of willpower to pull out the journal and write things down. Don't know why, I mean I love re-reading my dreams.

Audio journal? Nah, that takes too much time to play back and listen.

I think most people type a lot faster than they hand write. Its certainly easier for me to smash out a dream on the keyboard than to laboriously hand write it.

I guess we need to ask ourselves the questions:

Why do I want to write my dreams?

What do I hope to achieve, what are my goals in doing so?

What enjoyment/pleasures do I get from it?

Then, use the answers to these questions and others to inspire dream writing/typing/recording

Oh, I must also add. Unless you have a set habit, its hard to do anything requiring will power when first waking up in the morning because your brains still half asleep. You're likely dehydrated, you need energy from food, the bathrooms calling, the day's stressors are playing re-appearing in your mind and your brain convinces you that writing down those dreams are of lesser importance!

I have found the same....I sometimes have to really talk myself into writing them down.

But....I have also found that when I feel things flagging a bit it's because I have not been journaling. When I make a stronger effort and get back to it, lucidity always picks back up.

I also really like to spend some time during my daytime practice mulling over last night's dreams to see what I can learn from them relative to becoming more lucid, whether they were lucid or not. And no matter how clear they were when I first woke up......they always fade if I did not write them down.

They're like 'shadow memories'. Elusive, fleeting and temporary unless they were so unusual, unique and special that our brain takes note to store them in the long term memory.

The other way is when we take conscious note to 'download' them from whatever unstable realm they are wavering in

Playing around with dream fragments can be quite fun as they lead to so many "AHA, I REMEMBER" moments!

For most people, it is no more than this; a cost-benefit analysis.

Fortunately, journaling is absolutely not a requirement to have regular LDs. I have journaled consistently only a few times in my life, yet because I have put in lengthy periods of awareness and other practices, I have lucids regularly even when I don't practice for months. Sometimes I like to just make a point of committing dreams to memory in the morning, writing them down later if I wish.

As far as remembering dreams without keeping a journal; it helps to have a goal to achieve in your LDs. The more you are motivated to achieve that goal, the more you will remember, and incidentally, want to write down.

That said, keeping a journal is extremely advantageous if the time spent is worth it to you.

I have been a bit lazy in journaling, myself. Maybe we all need to be more confident in ourselves in a roundabout way.

I find dream journaling to be a pain and really don't enjoy it, unless I'm recording a lucid dream. But, I will admit that in the past getting lucid is much easier when I consistently record my dreams.
      Total LDs (some very brief) = 2004: 4 * 2005: 18 * 2006: 16 * 2007: 2 * 2008: 0 * 2009: 0 * 2010: 1 * 2011: 12 * 2012: 3 * 2013: 1 * 2014: 6 * 2015: 1 * 2016: 0 * 2017: 18 * 2018: 3 * 2019: 0 (so far)
