Tell her "All it is is realizeing your in a dream and controling it" The name lucid scares my parents too. They had to wiki it to make sure it was ok.

Ignore her and download the PDF form of ETWOLD (doesn't cost anything, I may add). Parents have a tendency to really not understand lucid dreaming, unless they've had some experience with it themselves. Just continue as best you can in private.

Wonder if you tried telling her that the book is a science book. And tell her to see the good side, if you get a science book, it will help you with school projects at some point!

Yeah, go into detail about the benefits of lucid dreaming as well. Also, you mentioned that you've tried explaining that people can have lucid dreams, but have you actually taken the time to thoroughly explain to her what a lucid dream is? I could see how a misunderstanding on her part would make her uncomfortable about buying you the book.

I got the .pdf form. I have my own debit card, so i could have ordered it myself, but i don't think my parents would have understood if the UPS delivery man came to the door with a lucid dreaming book. It's a must have for anybody who wants to really get into lucid dreaming. It's a great book that really explains a lot. So i'd say if ordering it isn't possible, either have a friend order it for you and you'll pay them back or you could get the .pdf like Mario92 said.

Ok I will get the pdf and read it on the computer. And I mean no disrespect to my mother when I say this but I understand far more than her about lucid dreams and I am going to reasonably disobey her! Internet FTW

This was the excuse I used on my parents over 5 years ago. I actually did do a report on Lucid Dreaming as my final senior project. Using EWOLD, DreamViews and a few other sources I was able to create a nice presentation. My classmates had a hard time keeping up, but my teacher was blown away by the report. She gave me 500/500. Apparently there are not many people familiar with the phenomenon.

Ha ha ha, I hate narrow minded people. Look her in the eyes and tell her to respect your interests. It's not like she can stop you anyway now, is there?

Should have told her it was a fantasy book about a boy who has amazing dream adventures, Not really a lie and also parents will buy that stuff so easy

Or you can always tell her that its the book or you will bring hookers into the house.

Your presentation would bring them out of ignorance. Most people who are ignorant will probably find it to be a really cool thing anyone; if we're thinking of the same kind of ignorant people, these kind of people have fantasies that they want to live out, and are allergic to work and hard effort, meaning they'd take an interest in having to sleep more.

I may/will be doing an informative speech on lucid dreaming in several weeks, so I should know how a presentation to uninformed folks will go over.

In response to the OP, I'd say just shoot for the free PDF of ETWOLD. It's a terrible idea to argue with a parent over LDing, since every time it's mentioned they'll become apprehensive of the subject and won't want to hear about it. If you're alright with my asking, how old are you? That'll give some perspective as to how they may be viewing the whole idea of lucid dreams, coming from you, depending on how old you are. I don't discriminate based on age, but parents not only aren't as lenient, but can't be this lenient - if you're young and living with them, they are your responsibility and have to look out for you; even if you know that LDing isn't dangerous, it's not hard to understand where their concerns are coming from.

Tell your mom that you expanding your mind while sleeping safe in bed should be low on her list of things to worry about. Does she watch the news?
Better yet, help educate her about what lucid dreaming is, what you want it to be for you, etc. People usually dislike things with which they are unfamiliar.

Haha, what the hell are you worried about? What's she going to do; wake you up constantly while you sleep?

It doesn't matter what her opinion is on it. She won't be there in your dreams to stop you.

Maybe invite her to read the book as well? She can't possibly argue with that- and after reading a bit, she'll no doubt change her mind.

This may be your best option, actually. Show her what Stephen LaBerge found. Show her what lucid dreaming is so she won't be so skeptical of it. This may sound hard, but I'm sure you understand, that a parent generally isn't going to trust the findings of a 14 year old on something they haven't heard of before, but that their kid is knowledgable about. ETWOLD is what you need.

Well major update: I volunteered to go to wal-mart with my mom and help out but I engaged in a discussion about lucid dreams with her and she made an effort to listen. I explained everything I know and she said she would be willing to read some of the pdf!

Brilliant! I was just about to offer some advice, but then I saw this.

I consider myself to be rather lucky, my Dad seems quite interested in the subject.

Sorry but I just have to say that who cares if your parents don't want you to ld. I mean... it isn't anything bad/wrong and you don't have to tell then that you lucid dream again. Its not like they know if you are having regular dreams or lucid ones.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting to disobey your parents or anything... just sometimes it doesn't really matter if you do, unless you are planning to do smth stupid.

When I think of myself being asked that question, all I can really say is that it's nice to do something you enjoy without having to feel like you need to hide it from your parents or feel guilty about doing it. It's just a support thing; when things go right and you're excited about it, you can tell them all about it and they'll know what you're up to and what you're talking about. I tell my mom all about these kinds of things, but I haven't told my dad about me doing this, so I know what it's like on both sides of the tracks. I feel comfortable knowing that my mom is cool with it, but I feel pressured on the other hand because as much as I respect my dad, I've never told him about this stuff, so I can't just be like, "Dad! This is so awesome, I had my eigth lucid last night!", 'cause he'll have no idea what I'm talking about.

I guess it's just a comfort thing. If you really respect your parents, it can be a respect thing, because it's one more thing you involve them with in your life, one fewer thing to hide from them.
