It's very, very hard to WILD when you first go to sleep. First of all, you aren't relaxed as you would be when you wake up in the middle of the night. Secondly, you're not in a REM period yet, and that's the crucial part - dreams form mostly in REM, so even if you do manage to get into SP, you might just drift unconscious because a dream can't form.
During REM, your eyes move around by themselves, sometimes back and forth. This can happen during WILDs which is completely normal, but it can be annoying if your eyes open during this time. If it happens, wear an eye mask - the extra pressure might help keep your eyes closed, and if they do happen to open, you'll open your eyes into blackness instead of possible lights in your room.
