That's the thing, I like to call boys/men "guys", because it's more age ambiguous, i guess for girls/women," ladies" is good.

Ladies sounds... weird! Almost an insult. Used to be a good thing, but now "hey lady" is not good. Dudes and chicks works.

I was really kidding about the bleeding and all.

      Ugh, I agree.

I always hear people say, "you're a young lady, so don't act like that. Walk on the outside edge of the sidewalk away from the road, because you're the lady.

      Lady, lady, lady.

It's as if people haven't gotten their minds past the stereotypical early 1900s, when there was this image of women all prim and proper. Gotta be guarded and can't be anything else. It pisses me off.

As for the actual poll, for me it's probably when the person is 18+, and has a certain mental maturity.

Puffin, not every 18 yo has near the maturity you do...

Many don't reach that till they're more like 25 (or evar!)

Woman is more formal. You would call a gal a woman to her face, I think. I wouldn't want to be called a boy.

I have problems with about every term used to refer to either gender.

guy - Sounds too casual, doesn't work in some cases.

girl/boy - Sounds like a child, although you can get away with calling a female a 'girl' for a lot longer than you can with calling a male a 'boy'. After the age of 13 or so, 'boy' just sounds derogatory.

      female/male - Sounds too technical, non-casual.

lady - As others have said, sounds 1900's in some cases, or just rude in others, or how a child would refer to any female over the age of 14 or so.

woman - Doesn't feel right for people under the age of 25 or so (for me). At 22 I'm not sure whether to call myself one or not. If I try thinking to myself "I'm a woman," it feels kind of wrong. It's not because I think I'm immature, I just have certain associations with the word and don't think I fit under that description. I'm getting more used to it but it's difficult.

man - Similar problems as with 'woman'. Thinking even of a guy around my age as a 'man' just feels wrong. When I think of a 'man', it's usually someone above the age of 30 or so.

I wish there were general words, like male/female but less scientific-sounding.

Not so sure about the aversion to 'ladies', that you guys have. I guess it just really depends on how it's used. I hardly ever use the word in any other context than a greeting or when I'm saying goodbye "What's going on, ladies?" "G'night, ladies", etc. I work with a lot of women, so it's just something that is often said, and I've never gotten any sort of negative feedback.

With that being said, though, I really don't have a set way that I address a female - regardless of her age. Most girls that I'm just being social with, I call 'chick' or 'girl'. If they are someone I might be a little sweet on, or just get an overall warm and fuzzy feeling from, I might call them 'love'. But words like 'woman' I use completely at random, depending on what the conversation is. If I'm joking around with my daughter (who is 11), I'll say something like "look here, woman!" I'll do the same if I'm just joking around with someone else, in a 'put you in your place' kind of tone.

It's not so much the word that is used....but how it is said...

I kind of look at this way.

      Menstruation start - 25 = Young Woman
      26-49 = Woman
50 and above = Older Woman.
