You should have quoted his quote containing the picture.

Implies taking things seriously is the only way to get stuff done.
You can solve starvation etc. by not wanting other people to feel that sort of intolerable pain up until they die.
Just coz it's not serious, doesn't mean the pain isn't real, and most people don't want to see others in pain.

And taking things seriously is definitely NOT the way to keep life alive lol
War is probably the most obvious result of taking things too seriously.
And when you take your life seriously you tend to get too wound up in your own shit, and forget about others who are probably suffering way worse.
As the others said, not taking things seriously, seriously increases your life span, due to decreased stress and having more fun etc.
The only way to have it, is if you let go of it.

But I've always had a problem with the conclusion: that we're insignificant. Physical smallness does not necessarily imply less significance. Your right eye is a lot more important than a giant boulder. In all of those galexies, in all of that space, this is the only planet that we know of which has life. To me, and to most people, that makes our planet more significant than the billions of others. The fact that we're small is completely irrelevant while determining how significant we are.
Well, I think the point is that there are obviously more living things out there. And saying "this is the only planet that we know of which has life" is ridiculous I think. I've heard a lot of people say this.
But, seriously? I mean, we've been to the moon....

Sure our telescopes can see a bit further, probably not close enough to see beings on a planet past our solar system.

I know haha galaxies are the structures that stars form (they also form stars) but if your going to say by extension galaxies formed us than it was only one galaxy. Although it's still a mystery how the milky way formed, one possibility is that it formed by the merging of multiple galaxies, so maybe we are although I'd say made by galaxies rather than made of galaxies, unless your defining "I" as the whole of nature lol

Great! Now if I can only learn to witness this great universe, allowing the events to unfold while remaining blissfully free from being apart of them.

If only to be a witness while it all goes by then - only then I will have learned how to be and what to be doing with my "normal" waking state.
      Free of dreaming_s!.

Meanwhile I have to settle with knowing that I am star poo on a very small scale.

It wouldn't be too unreasonable to suggest that the reason we consider things which are "smaller" than other things to be in any way different in terms of meaning or utility or even relevance is something to do with the comparative force it can generally output within our individual lives (for that is after all, everything we are and know). The bigger the knife, the more scared you are, the smaller the animal the easier for you to kill. This doesn't hold strictly, but this is a definite general tendency within the lives of human beings towards things being smaller having something of a lesser importance or need to be taken into account in terms of survival and evolutionary importance.

Resultantly if we find us thinking ourselves rendered meaningless or we consider everything far less serious or consequential as a result of considering our scale (as this thread indeed does) we must consider that the only reason we have for the nihilistic shift in perspective is actually one based on a deep rooted and absolutely context and environmentally based instinct (that is, of something smaller outputting less influence into our immediate lives). What in your mind seems to be profound, celestial, and high above simple primal urges, can in fact be seen as little more than a simple formalisation and reflection of one of those very primal instinctual biases.

Because the universe is a non-intelligent amassment of all that exists and is incapable of having a concept of importance.

Is this meant to be ironic, or literal?

It's literal. The only parts of the universe capable of considering things important are things that live on Earth (and maybe a few other planets.) And the fact that the vast majority of the universe in no way affects those parts makes it effectively unimportant.

We are a part of the universe. Therefore the universe doesn't care about importance. Even though we do. Makes sense.

if everything is of equal importance than everything is of no importance. Importance only has meaning as a scale, it ceases to be if equal.
