I actually use a progression of frequencies to achieve lucid dreaming. I have some pretty awesome professional (yet not super expensive!) software that allows integration with biofeedback devices, so I spent a while tinkering with what made my brain do what, and what kind of effect I had.
I'm actually writing an article for the site now about how to achieve lucid dreaming by using progressive frequency changes, but it's taking a while because I'm having trouble finding free resources to give my readers that will cover every step of the process. It's hard to find genuine stuff for free, especially at specific frequencies. Too many people using Gnaural to put a bunch of useless crap out there.
But anyway, what I've found works for most people (and this is just generalizing) is to start with a 10.5Hz frequency for approximately 6 minutes. This will get people into a relaxed but alert state. Then drop to a 10Hz frequency for 9 minutes. At this point, the body and mind will be relaxed and serotonin levels will be elevated, so some people might start to feel euphoric. After that, an 8.3Hz frequency for another 5 minutes, during which you're encouraged to visualize mental objects you'd like to appear in the LD.
That's the alpha stage, and should last 20min. Then the progression moves on to the theta wave stage.
The next step is either a 7Hz or 6.3Hz, depending on which one the person responds to better. This should last for another 5 minutes. Then either a 5Hz or 4.5Hz frequency for as long as the person wants to continue should result in lucid dreaming. I've had better luck and more consistency at 4.5Hz, but some people do just fine at 5.
Anyway, sorry for the really long reply, but that's just a general overview. There are actually even more frequencies to achieve it faster once the brain becomes used to the process, and there's a lot of reasoning and research that I've put into coming up with even this basic system, and I can safely say it's pretty effective.
Now you can see why I have a problem finding free stuff that fits the bill to put in my article haha. You can't just go download a free tone generator and expect to put in a couple of numbers and come up with a track you can pop on youtube and that's that. The reason so many of the ones already there are ineffective is because people just simply don't know what they're doing. I'm talking with a guy at the company I got my software from and trying to work out a deal about maybe exporting a custom session to a track that I could offer, but they're hesitant because they don't want a bunch of other people coming back to them and asking for free handouts.
