A song came to me in a lucid dream.

      Hi I'm Isaac Stearns,

I've been lucid dreaming for over a year and a half and have been writing music since I was 16. I wanted to share with everyone a song that came to me in a lucid dream...

I was in a dream and snapped into lucidity. I immediately realized how I could make use of this and sat myself at a piano and told myself that I was going to play a song I've never heard before. Amazingly in the dream I saw all of the piano keys and could hear all the notes I was hitting.

Indeed I played a song I never heard before.

I woke up right after and immediately recorded what I had just played in the dream. To my surprise the piano keys I was hitting in the dream matched up with the waking world. It was a song that after a few months of developing evolved into what I have now.

      Here's a link to my song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QciamqSIzg

      I hope you enjoy it!

      Isaac Stearns

p.s. I'm working on a CD and will hopefully have it completed early next year.

I've had something vaguely similar to this happen to me once, though it was in a non-lucid dream. I just heard the melody play. It's a thrilling experience, to say the least. Nice tune. Please, have more composer lucid dreams.

I actually tried this technique in an LD once before. I sad at my table and said to myself "i will write a completely original piano concerto." I actually did but i could only remember the first page when i woke up, but it was pretty good, but not something i would build a career on xD.

This all reminds me of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan, which as we all know came to him in a dream.

Music in dreams is always awesome! Even cooler that you were able to remember it and develop it into a full song! Most impressive, and well done

      Hey, this is awesome.

I've had dreams where I played the piano in dreams, with original music, but I can't remember it properly when I wake up. Like RB said, it's great that you followed through with this.

I pick up a half-eaten copy of a book by Neil Gaiman, and decide this is all his fault.

      Awesome!

I just watched the youtube video and I think this is great. I have had my own personal experience in a non-lucid dream. I wasn't the one playing the music.. more of a spectator at a concert by my favorite band, dream theater. Somehow in my dream I invented an incredible song, with an awesome very fast and melodic guitar solo. When i woke up I knew that it was just a dream but I couldn't explain to myself you i had invented this song to listen to in my own dream. It was such an awesome experience! I haven't become very good at lucid dreaming but when I do, you have given me great ideas for what to do. Feel free to PM me about any other possible experiences with composing dreams.

The thing that fascinates me about this song (other than its beauty and its creation), is that it sounds vaguely familiar to me.

Like I have played it myself in several dreams of my own, or pieces that are very similar to it. These were non-lucid dreams, so I can't be sure, but over the years I have played music in my dreams off and on, and some of them sound like this one.

As I said, I cannot be sure. But it is an intriguing fact.

Hey, this is great! I love fellow musicians.

Here's an interesting story: I don't know if you're familiar with this particular musician, but he goes by the moniker Aphex Twin. He's one of the greatest, most complex, most innovative producers of electronic music, and he wrote his album "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" in his lucid dreams. He would wake up and record whatever music was in his head from his dream. Quite amazing. You should really check this album (and all of his work) out.

Once in a while, one can hear music in lucid dreams. Sometimes things one already knows, or somethings things one has never heard.

Once I heard a kind of duet between a guitar and a grand piano. It was like two streams of flowing water-distinct yet complimentary. No rythm at all--just flowing and intertwining. Never heard anything like it before or since.

Hi Issac. Just to let you know, this thread inspired me to finally create an account here, so thank you

Your song is absolutely beautiful, and you play with great articulation and dynamics. As some others have said already, something about this piece makes it very easy for me to believe this was composed in a dream. It has a beautiful melody and the harmonies are soaring. It reminds me of a song called Kimble by Umphrey's McGee, which has a beautiful piano part. Keep up the good work, and keep being inspired by your dreams!

I've always meant to compose a song on guitar in my dreams, but whenever I get lucid, guitar is never the first thing that pops into my mind, and my dream usually ends before I even get the chance to try.
