DILDing doesn't require waking up. It's simply a product of your critical awareness, which can be cultivated in your waking life (and which also has additional benefits), and can be simplified to this:

1. Something unrealistic happens in a dream
2. You have good enough critical awareness, or, in other words, common sense to notice that it is in fact unrealistic
3. You conclude that you must be dreaming


Try asking yourself multiple times a day whether you are dreaming (and I mean sincerely asking, not simply repeating the question arbitrarily) and with enough motivation, this routine will make its way into your dreams and you'll become lucid as if by magic!
