Thread: Creating a recurring dream character

Hi all,

I've not had many successful lucids in the past few years, however I've been thinking a lot about a topic that may help me out in my quest as well as helping make my dreams more interesting.

The concept of a dream guide isn't new, but from the topics I've read the dream guide just tends to "appear" in one or more dreams, and this recurrence of a dream character is what prompts the dreamer to see them as their dream guide - which in a way would create a placebo effect in having them appear more often in the future. What I'm interested in is similar but different. I tend to be quite creative, dabbling in digital 2D and 3D artwork and have created a number of my own "characters" in the past. These often reflect my mood and situation of real life at the time. Instead of stumbling across my dream guide, what I want to do is create one. Give them a form so I can identify them in the dream, and then ask for their name (I'm bad with names and it would be interesting to see what my subconscious comes up with).

They'd essentially be a dream guide with a form I can relate to, but as well as being there to answer questions, etc I would also like to consider them a "dream friend" - someone I can meet, find out more about, someone with a backstory and someone I can take with me on my dream adventures (dreams are generally pretty lonely if you think about it). Additionally, this is one of the ultimate reasons I want to become better at lucid dreaming, and if I can begin to consistently form a story with this special dream character then I can only imagine my motivation and success levels for lucid dreaming in the future would get better.

Has anyone else tried this, or have any success with this? I'm really keen on the idea and it would be interesting to hear the opinions of others!

I started a project attempting to bring two characters from my comics into my dreams. I've had little success, though placed little emphasis on the project. But from what I can gather reading other posts and DJs, creating a persistent dream character is entirely possible. There are people that have created entire persistent dream-realms. (I am not one of them.) So how hard could characters be?

I recall a post saying that creating a character poses a unique set of challenges. You need to get inside this characters head, and know everything about them. Their appearance is only a small part of it. How they react to certain situations, what motivates them, what they like and dislike, their strengths,weaknesses,fears. What does their voice sound like? Are they emotive or apathetic? How do they move about? And most importantly, would you be able to forge a friendship with this character or are your personalities incompatible? The last thing you want to do is put in all this time and energy just to make a new enemy.

If you know your character inside and out, and make use of autosuggestion, visualization or another technique (say, taking dream journal entries and re-writing them with fictional material so that the character appears in the dream.) then yes, this is 100% doable.

However, the character that you create can never be a true dream guide. This is because your dream guide(s), in the way that they look/act and even their choice to appear in your dreams or not is meant to be a lesson to you in and of itself. Your true dream guide(s), when they manifest will make decisions for their appearance and personality on their own.

I have almost the same purpose as you. I am still trying to meet my beloved fictional character when LD but still no hope. I want to meet lynx from chrono cross video game. He is so handsome like seriously. Good luck in meeting your fictional characters.

I've succeeded im this technique quite a bit I love to summon Kratos and dual team with him against the mighty KRAKEN SCYLLA HYDRA(mixture of mythological sea monsters I made up)

Currently I'm working on creating my own "Dream Universe" with its own reoccurring characters. So far I've seen pretty good progress, but with one character in particular, every time I see him, his face is usually altered in some manner. Either his skin is paler/darker or his hair is a different length, or his eyes are a different shade etc. He has the basic qualities and resembles what I want him to look like, but its hard to keep his "look" consistent.

However, that being said, though his physical characteristics may change from time to time. His personality, demeanor, everything that makes him, him, are the same because I emotionally expect him to be.

I've definitely heard of people who have made their dream guides take on the appearance of people who they think are wise or sagacious. If a particular historical figure or inspirational fictional character resonates with you, I'm sure that would work.

This is one of my ongoing goals. I managed to meet her twice in a dream early on, but haven't had much luck in a long time.

This is absolutely possible, although I have not yet tried this. What type of techniques are you using to manifest this? If you read Napoleon Hills: Think and grow rich he has a chapter called the 6th sense. (This chapter is taken out of his books when re published for newer addition's, I guess because it was thought to be controversial). He talks about how he would mentally visualize, before bed, people who's admirable traits he wanted to absorb. He goes into detail about this but what eventually happened was the people began to take on personalities of their own and even develop habits (Lincoln was always late). This mental council would visit him in dreams and thought, to the point where he became concerned and actually stopped this technique. Only to later start it up again after Lincoln visited him and told him he was doing good work and to continue. He even talked to (who was alive at the time) Edison. (who was both part of his imaginary council and a friend) his response was interesting

I met Lana Lang in a dream

"Which" Lana Lang? lol The Kristen Kreuk version?

She looked slightly different from Kristin Kreuk but really similar. I talked to her briefly, read one of her books, asked for Clark Kent's powers and then flew away. I love Kristin Kreuk and often find myself wishing i looked more like her.

I'm trying this out myself, it seems logically possible so long as you can map out the framework in your conscious mind.
As my sig suggests i'm calling it a Deiform(devine form) Companion. All you should need to do is an outline traits as mentioned above i'm hoping.

I'm interested in whether anybody has any in depth understanding of this particular subject, preferably literal experience.

I just spent some time putting together a short list of tips about this topic for another member (HelloBro123) I'm copy/pasting it here, it would be better that in my introduction thread XD I have four reccuring DCs, in this I'm talking about one that I wanted to meet again after seeing him once, but there are things that hold true for all four of them and things that can be adapted.

- Don't give up. took me almost a year to have him where I wanted him (granted, I flailed blindly a lot and was new to that lucid dreaming thingy.)
- Document each attempt; write down everything about it. Everything. Everything you've seen, felt, smelled, even tasted. re-read it from time to time.
- Try to think about your DC during the day. Just a thought in passing should be enough to increase the possibility of them to be in your dreams too.
- On the same note, give them a name/find out their name. It should help giving them some consistance and stand up from your other DC.
- Find out in what situation you first met them. Try to recreate it and expect them to come back!
- Find a summoning method that work for you. I have three: calling their name (usually work when I see a lot of people but don't try to see their faces before calling) asking another DC where I can find them (their can throw you in a wild goose chase tho.) and my favorite: I put my hand behind me expecting someone to pick it up. (It can have surprising results, but it's a dream after all.)
- Keep summoning them. They don't look like last time? Tell them. They sound different? Tell them too. They should become more and more consistent over time (mine flat out told me that he was working on looking and behaving the same way on all my dreams!)
-Allow yourself some breathing room. Their may be very slighty different in each dream, but as long as their core caracteristics are here, it's fine. If their start to deviate too much for you, point it out to them, there may be a reason for it!

A lot of it boil down to dream belief, but that's a perfectly usable tool, in my opinion. My subconscious can and will be pretty facetious, but if I'm convinced of something, it is pretty willing to play along.
