Hey, urr i don't really have accounts on many "online communities" and my friends don't play video games, so i thought why not ask this place for some recommendations?

Basically, i've been bored of them since the age of 16 and rarely ever play anymore, but i get these urges to play from time to time, and i got a new PC that's pretty powerful. I mostly play strategy and simulation and all that lame shit, but i'm willing to give anything a try if it's interesting (i just don't know about other games!).

So urrr, non-strategy games i've really enjoyed in the last couple years (2009 - present):
      Fallout 3
      Assassins Creed 2
      Hitman: Blood Money
      Just Cause 2
Mother 3 (i usually don't play RPGs but this was fantastic)
      Sleeping Dogs
      Braid
      Skate 3
      Portal 2
      Super Meat Boy
      Realm of the Mad God

And that's about it really. I have played a bunch of little games in between, usually innovative and creative "art" games etc. that i enjoyed ( i played his free one called Papers Please the other day, it was brilliant (go play it!)), but i have also played a bunch of "big name" games that bored me... such as Dishonored, FarCry 3, Crysis, Tomb Raider, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed 3, Skyrim (this was okay i suppose, but i was unemployed when i played it so i had nothing better to do haha) - all games i didn't play for too long before quitting.

So urr, any ideas? I don't like fast paced action games, i don't really buy into stories that often, i'm really not into dragons and wizards and elfs, I dont enjoy playing games multiple times and i jump and get scared easily hahaha. I also only own a (high end) PC, X360 and PSP. Anything innovative and immersive is right up my street.

Wow, this was wordy... may as well tell you my all-time favourite non-strategy games are the ones listed above (specifically FO3, AC2, JC2, HM:BM, S3) and Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawks series (lol) and... well nothing that i can imagine i still enjoy playing sticks out, yknow...

Thanks though! I didn't mean to be so wordy!

If you liked super meat boy you should try binding of isaac. I love that game, the first time I've ever bothered to get every achievement in a game. It's really hard too and there's a things you'll recognize from super meat boy in there.

Might also wanna try the walking dead game, I've heard people say it's good.

I would recommend Demon's Souls. It's also extremely challenging (at least at first), and although it's technically an action-rpg the action is heavily patience/strategy-based, as using a single weapon type or playstyle for the whole game simply won't work out. While you said you aren't into the whole "dungeons and dragons" style fantasy setting with magic and mythical beasts, I think you may still enjoy this game (it has a more dark, medieval setting as opposed to a fantasy realm).

      Super Meat boy was amazing.

The developers that made Meat Boy are working on a game called "Mew-Genics" that involves you raising cats as a 'crazy cat lady'. It looks pretty funny

Haven't really been able to get into any games recently. Tried Dark Souls, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, and Metro: Last Light, but I just don't vibe with them. Maybe it's because my computer sucks and I have to play them with shitty graphics. I'm the kind of guy who plays the same games over and over though. I play through Fable and Fable 2 at least 7 and 2 times a year, respectively. Also Spiderman 2 and the first Halo.

I have a copy of Halo 4 waiting for me when I get back to the US tomorrow, and I just ordered Rayman 3 in the hopes that my old xbox still works.

Pokemon: White 2 On the DS when I need to just kill time.

If anyone is interested in checking it out there's a Free to Play 'Mech Warrior' shooter that is absolutely fantastic. It's called Hawken. Playhawken.com

Gameplay video for anyone interested. It's long, but you get the idea. Fast forward to 2:45, that's where the gameplay starts.

There's 15 or something different mechs you can pilot, each with different weapons and abilities. All of them you can customize through some simple skill trees and item upgrades you can purchase for points (earned while playing matches).

      And its beautiful.
      Because space is beautiful.
      And its fun.

I can't really tell you how awesome it is, you have to see for yourself. Like the Matrix.

My brother hates it for some reason though, I have no idea why.

DEM FEELS. By the 5 minute mark I was already on the verge of tears.

Not a fan of Final Fantasy? To each their own, I guess.

The nostalgia factor is way intense for me.

      Penumbra: Black Plague.
Terrifying. Last time I tried to play this I was recording myself for some reason, so it wasn't as scary as it is now. This time I'm just alone and not talking so it feels real.... Last night I played it for around 10 minutes before I got scared and had to exit.

Why is it supposed to be hard to listen to that?
I got to like 3 minutes in and stopped just because it was so boring - the first song at least.
But I think maybe I'll listen to it while doing homework just so I can get that virtual $5.

EDIT: I just listened to it all. The music is okay, I can see it being nostalgic to someone who's played the game. I knew someone who had great nostalgia from the ff soundtracks and listened to them all the time, but I guess to someone who hasn't played the games (like me) there's nothing special about it. Similar to how I could listen for a long time to the Game of Thrones or Oblivion soundtracks just because I associate it all with the feelings I got during the show and game.

I get scared playing penumbra even during the middle of the day
I finished it both on my own and with a friend, it's an awesome game but ultimately extremely depressing. I tried playing with earphones on at three at night and I hit the part where a huge ass worm follows you and my hands were shaking for ten minutes from the adrenaline.

I love all the Final Fantasy tracks. Probably because I fell in love with ff8, once you get into it every ff song becomes amazing, especially nobuo uematsu's stuff. It's especially the nostalgia that plays a huge part but tunes can be really amazing on there own. I learned to zanarkaan from ff10 and basically every track from ff8 on piano and people love when I play them, and I love playing them.
Besides that the oblivion theme track and age of mythology have a special place in my heart too.

Yeah, I understand. I've been warned against playing any ff games, as I tend to get way too 'in to' even things that most people wouldn't, so something like that may ruin my life. Ex: When I was 11-14 I was obsessed with so obsessed with Harry Potter that life felt grey and miserable in comparison. And I've heard ff games can cause that feeling more than anything.

And that's great about the piano. =) I'm still in the beginner stage of learning violin, and have these fantasies about being able to play these amazing songs, like the Morrowind theme or something. To actually cause that music that makes me feel so good to hear. I don't know if I'll ever actually get there.

The worm thing freaked me out too.
I actually played Penumbra - Black Plague again last night, in the dark, with headphones, for like 3 hours, and got pretty far. It's the second one, and one of the symptoms of the 'infection' the character has is de ja vu. Which I think they mimic quite well. They bring parts of the first game back to the second game, but they're a little different, giving anyone who's played the first game the 'feeling of being here before.' I also like that there are less monsters in Black Plague. The dogs in the first one annoyed me, as I went through most of the game not even realizing they could be killed, so to go anywhere I always had to run and hide from them, which after a while wasn't even scary anymore, just annoying. The monsters are scarier now and the game is getting creative.

Yeah I really have become obsessed with a few of them, but it's mainly because I used to play them on the ps1 which has a great nostalgia factor for me now. Secondly I really love ff8, a game very different from most of the others. FF8 focuses much more on character development and the storyline, but it has an unreal battle mechanic too (if your into it). I enjoyed ff4 and 6 yet I never really felt the same playing them...
If you don't mind playing old games on emulators I'd definitely reccomend you to check out the mid-range 6-9 final fantasies and see what you think of them.

It's absolutely amazing to play songs properly. It has taken me a lot of years to get into the rhythm of playing game music but now I can pretty much learn anything. I have a classical training in piano so I had quite a good basis but some tunes are still quite tough for me.
Keep on practicing though, you will eventually get there. I tried learning a few of the songs on this youtube video two years ago and I can finally play them

Ya those dogs were a right pain in the ass, I found out how to kill them when I was stuck on a little platform I just started throwing shit at them.
Did you know it's possible to kill the infected human guys too? I did it but it took almost 40 mins of continues hitting and a shit load of reorganizing objects in the room
The ending of black plague is really good but I felt so empty inside, the story is phenomenal when you're immersed. It took me while to understand the story at the end but I think you will see that for yourself
