Thread: What game are you currently playing?

Pokemon X!

Just got the new XCOM expansion, so I played that a bit yesterday...

I've been playing Skyrim a bit again, around level 22-ish I think, mostly archery/illusion/conjuration/sneak. I can never seem to get too far into this game before switching to something else. I want to try to stick with this character for once and actually finish the game (the main story, anyway). I had/have this same problem with Oblivion. I've spend over 100 hours in that game on multiple characters, but never beat the main story.

And I'm always dabbling off and on in Minecraft, SP survival.

I just started Grand Theft Auto 5. I'm trying out obeying the traffic rules for the immersion factor. There are alot of damn traffic lights in Los Santos.

Pokemon Y. I have already done X.

I was playing Jack II, until I got to a really tough mission, so I've dived back into Bioshock.

Trying to 100% LEGO Lord of the Rings!

GTA IV still havent got GTA V yet hahha

Just started another Final Fantasy V challenge run: a party of all melee classes (no magic/hybrids). God I've been playing this game constantly for the past 5 years...

Ha, just started another ffviii run, damn I've been playing for like 11 years now and I still haven't gotten enough. It kinda sucks though that the game is still a breeze for me even with a difficulty mod that makes enemies 3x stronger.

Right? These games are like the plague, man! They keep you busy for years and just when you think you're done bam, relapse.

I strongly consider starting Secret of Mana right now, I love that game.

Friday I picked up the first console I've owned since the original NES (though I've played just about all of the consoles since then). It was the Black Friday PS3 bundle, and I've been playing through The Last of US. The graphics are pretty impressive for last-gen console gaming. Gameplay is sometimes a little awkward or arbitrary--like, "We're going to have you push some buttons now to remind you this is a game and not a movie." It's almost a reversal of the old formula; it's not so much a game with a lot of cinematics as it is a movie with frequent interludes of gameplay. As such, though, it's well voiced and well rendered. Fallout 3 was obviously a big influence, and they've included some similar mechanics in terms of crafting, repairing and leveling, but all of them waaaaaay simplified.

Taosaur, if you thought The Last of Us was rather like watching a movie, then I would probably not recommend Beyond 2 Souls, as that was very much like watching a movie. It was an interesting journey, however, and and the graphics were beautiful, but overall it was very short. I absolutely loved The Last of Us, though, and even though there was just enough gameplay for me, I hope they build a bit more in in the sequel (I also hope they make a sequel!)

Played a few games of starcraft 2, and am considering buying the expansion now that I have a good laptop. But the complexity of the game is so big that it would steal loads of hours that I should be using for study

Oh, I'm loving The Last of Us, too. I think I'm pretty close to the end, and it's a great story that gets you invested in the characters. I appreciate that they made crafting and upgrades less elaborate because I'd rather not spend too much time on that stuff, but having some of it does reinforce the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. In general I think the gameplay does a good job of getting us caught up in the story. There are just times here and there where it seems like they're giving us busywork--mostly I'm thinking of dragging dumpsters and planks and ladders around. A couple of those situations are almost actual puzzles, but a lot of them are kind of pointless. It's a minor thing, though. While the controls and mechanics are the game's weakest point, the overall experience is still outstanding.

@Taosaur, my apologies, I mis-understood your post. I get what you mean about pushing the dumpsters around, and I agree that overall it is an outstanding experience.

Beyond two souls was also an enjoyable journey (not as good as the last of us in my opinion), but the gameplay in many areas was just pushing the buttons highlighted on the screen. In other parts it was actually challenging, and others fun, but overall I enjoyed it mainly for the storyline and graphics. I would play a sequel, and it looks like they are setting it up at the end to have one.

I played the 1-hour demo for Mortal Kombat and it's pretty movie-intensive, too (story mode, obvs) for a button-masher fight game.

One con of the PS3 that I hadn't heard before I got it is, it's LOUD. I guess it varies by game and the more cinematics, the worse the noise, but when it reads discs it sounds like an angle grinder. I need to figure out some way to get this thing farther away from me and/or deaden the sound, because it's a constant distraction from the content. The other solution is to only buy digital download games, but discs tend to be way cheaper if the game's not a new release. For instance, I could get the Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition from the PSN store for $50, or the disc from Amazon for $12. Makes you wonder if they made the optical drives horrendously loud on purpose to drive digital sales. I'm sure Sony gets a much bigger cut of the digital sales, too.

I downloaded Ascend: Hand of Kul about a week ago. It's a nice game, especially for a free-to-play. I'm about to ascend for the second time. My first and current Caos were both Dark, so I'm currently deciding between Void and Light.
