I think that you have a good point with you need something to remember it by. If you read EWOLD then you will learn about schema, which are the things that dreams are made out of. I think that if you can remember what led to the dream you can remember your dreams. If you can go through the previous day in your mind you could stumble on it (I do this regularly). A mantra is a good tool, and normally waking up in the middle of the night will help you remember, so either an alarm early in the night or if you can wake yourself up without it, that would be key.
After years of not caring about dreams your mind gets really good at shoving the dreams out of the way. So think about what you did a year ago today. You normally will come up with nothing unless you had something you marked important in your mind. So I would read a few tutorials and go all out! Get fired up! Be confident that it will work! Another factor is getting a good amount of sleep. 8 hours is good for you.
