My Parents Just Said "No More Lucid Dreaming!"?

I was talking to them about a dream...a non-lucid, just a dream I had. They said, "Speaking of which, we don't want you to lucid dream anymore." When I asked why they responded, "It doesn't sit right with us."

I respect my parents...And unless I can convince them otherwise I guess my LD days are over, before they even began..Why?

Hi anemone, sorry to hear this but it sounds to me that they think there's a bit more going on than just a dream. My hubby thought this at first untill I explained things better to him. There is no harm in lucid dreaming, I'm a natural and always ave been just like a lot of the others on here, I didn't ask for it, I just got stuck with it. If there was any harm in it it wouldn't happen naturally. It's not like I go and talk to the devil or anything and ask him to send me to the depths of an evil place each night lol. I think it might be worth speaking to them again, a proper grown up conversation and explain it a little more to them. Show them this site and tell them about us natural lucid dreamers. If all else fails then although I wouldn't disrespect your parents I will say your dreams are your own, no one can controll what you dream or what you want to dream about, no one can stop you from saying to yourself that you want to each night as you fall to sleep, no one will know what you say in your own head. I was lucid dreaming etc naturally and never told my husband for a very long time incase he thought it was a nut case or he thought it was something bad and like I say he did untill I sat him down and explained everything in detail. If they would like to hear from me and my view in a very nice way then let me knw and I'll PM you and you can show them, hope this helps hunni and good luck

Thanks. I had a short conversation with my mom, and she said she wanted to talk with me about it later, because she didn't understand fully.

My family and I are religious, so I think they are worrying it is Pagan or something. Of course, I looked up the history, and it sounds like people have just been doing it since the dawn of time, once they figured out how.

Hey namone, I'm a Christian, and I can safely say there's no harm. With Lucid Dreaming, all your doing is dreaming, (everyone does, 3-7 times per night), and controlling them. It's done for safe fun, and pretty much purely recreational. Lucid Dreaming = Just controlling what you're doing in your dream, instead of just flowing with it. I've met other Christians on this site, and they're the same way. Good luck on your conversation with your parents, and blessings be unto your family!

There is absolutely nothing super natural about lucid dreaming.

Being lucid just means you know where you are.

If your dreaming, and you know your in your house, it's no different then knowing your in a dream.

Your parents don't understand lucid dreaming and what it means I think. My mother only recently understands. It's very simple for people to over complicate and over think the concept of lucidity, it is a fundamentally simple concept, and you need to emphasize the simplicity of it.

It was funny for me to see this thread, as I had the exact same problem, namone. My family and I are Christians, and my mother falsely believed that LDing was something supernatural and evil that went against our religion. Luckily, I managed to have a good chat with her about it, explain what it actually was. There's no harm in LDing, as everyone else above me has said. Anyways, hope it all goes well.

At first i thought that his thread is supposed to be a joke... but seeing the comments.... This is just ridiculous... Lucid Dreaming is not harmful for you and there is nothing evil in it, it's all in your brain... How could they stop you in it anyway? Will they keep you awake 24/7?

Yes. I talked to them last night; and while they never said 'Yes' the didn't give a 'No' either. I think I convinced them it wasn't wrong, and they just kinda let me decide. So, I think I'm good...I still can't get a WILD lol.

Well it's cool to hear that namone. Remember to respect your parents with what they choose though. Like some others have said, just emphasise there is nothing sinful about this. They dream every night, and so do you. LDing might actually be better, as it helps your creativity instead of just wasting time on dreams you don't rememer. Hope you can stay!

This is exactly why I've not told my parents about it. They just wouldn't understand what it is, and they'd think I'm mucking around with my brain or something and that it's harmful. They'd probably think I'd wake up one day as a vegetable.

That's just stupid. What happens in your own mind is yours, nobody else can have a say that's the beauty of it. That being said, they don't have to know about it, it's not like they will be able to see your dreams. Just make sure you hide you dream journal or maybe put it in code.

Maybe they found your dream journal and were a little freaked out that you were writing that stuff down? I don't know about you, but if my parents got a hand on my journal I'd have some explaining to do... Haha

Good you were able to talk to your parents again. Just educate them about it! If they still don't want you to lucid dream, just do it anyway! It's not like they will be able to tell if you are having lucids anyway. I can assure you there isn't anything satanic or harmful about lucid dreaming .

I like to see lucid dreaming as thoughts that takes shape as an HD image dream-platform. So according to this perspective lucid dreams are your own thoughts. Ordering you not to lucid dream is like ordering someone not think or at least not to be aware of the fact that he is thinking (which is also an absurd). In today's society everyone has the right to think what ever they want and no one can tell anyone not to think. It is even encouraged to think for yourself thanks to the ideas of the "Movement of Knowledge". If it wasn't like that it means that we would live in a world similar to world described in the book 1984 (a great book!) where people can not express themselves or even think for themselves. So you have every right to think , to dream and to lucid dream no matter what your parents or anybody else says. Now go and get yourself a splendid lucid dream!

Like why do you even bother talking to them about it?
Your parents saying "stop lucid dreaming" is almost like saying "stop having goals in life" just do what you have to do and share with people that will understand it. Simple as that, thread closed.

I'm sorry if this comes off as a bit rude, but your parents seem very controlling. You have a right to what goes on in your head, and they do not have the right to tell you what you are allowed to think. If you wish to continue your quest for lucid dreaming, not even the most totalitarian parents can read minds. You may come upon a lucid intentionally or accidentally, but I promise that they won't find out unless you let them. As mentioned by others above, it is not harmful; rather it is an amazing experience. The only reasons for anyone to discourage it would be control, or ignorance of what lucid dreaming actually is. It is probably the latter, or a mixture of both, but you know your parents more than I do. Hopefully your explanation will clarify their understanding of lucid dreaming and they will allow it, if not it is your choice of whether or not to continue. If you wish to continue, I look forward to seeing you around, but if you wish to stop out of respect for your parents, maybe we will still see you here in a few years when you have gained some independence from your parents and make the decisions you want for yourself.

I think your parents DO truly want the best for you; they just are frightened by what they don't understand.

Well at first my dad thought i am in a cult, or something xD .
Then when i told him i can do it, and that its real, he said i could maybe damage my brain doing it .

People are sceptical about things that are unknown to them.
Well my dad is awesome so i showed him the facts (show on discovery, wikipedia, etc..), and he said ok, good luck with lucid dreaming..
(i tried to convince him to try it, but he can't even remember one dream after waking up, and he is lazy to write dreams down ;P )

If your parents REALLY won't let you, then say OK, and keep trying to get lucid !
(they never know whats going on inside your head, and whether you are having normal dreams, or lucid ones..)

      /enjoy

When i confronted my parents about lucid dreaming, they said: "Don't be stupid. And please don't try to get attention by talking about weird, childish and foolish things."
I don't know how to deal with it either!!!

I'm sorry. My parents were against it as well. I am away from them now, but I understand. I would recommend waiting till you are older or trying to convince your parents.

      Ask them:
What is so crazy about it?
What they would do with a virtual reality video game. (What I think is the best description of a LD)
What their favorite dream ever was, and if they wish they could go back.
