Learn to fall asleep consciously and use it to have LDs

Check your memory, did any suprising event happpen ? does the present make sense ? visualize what you will do when lucid, and how. Reality check as reminder of your intention to lucid dream tonight. Sleep as good as you can; when going to sleep, relax and invite whatever comes with curiosity. Grab your dream journal immediately as you awake and write everything you can recall (if only when you wake up for good). Keep calm, positive and persistent, and don't forget to have fun along the way

mmmm... indeed. It is what flowofmysoul claims this. He might be an exception to the rules, but he seems to have friends that do that as well, listening to him might be something that we all should do, but then again, he might just be an exception. It is also impossible to know if you do or not really, because some people like oreo and hukif don't have any non LDs, so technically all their REM and NREM would be lucid. However it seems like the mind skips time throughout the night, dream or no dream, REM or NREM. I have felt this before when a 1 minute WILD (close my eyes, instant LD, walk around, play on computer, wake up) took about an hour. Somehow my mind blotted out 59 minutes without me feeling like any time had passed and somehow remaining conscious the whole time. Food for thought.

Vagaltone, what technique are you using for this? Do you plan on accomplishing this this year?

Something like this happened to me once, when I was doing a WILD. it was midnight, and I was WILDing. I am a heavy breather, but I needed to breathe in a calm way through my nose. I did that, and fought the urge for oxygen, hoping I would calm down, and my heart rate would slow down(foolish me). After a minute, I gave up(I was fully conscious) , and saw my dad. I asked him the time, and he said 5. What!? I blacked out because of the breathing thing, but I felt it only literally a minute or less, and I was fully conscious(of course, no dreams or nothing).
I don't know if you meant something like that

Yup, that would be cool .. falling asleep consciously*, seeing the beginning of dreams, being lucid, returning to the void of sleep, dreams again..

      * perhaps hearing my occasional snoring ( you can only do that if you retain some consciousness right ? ); Btw, at sleep onset, i sometimes hear myself snoring and know i am sleeping, but very soon i get totally unconscious and fall asleep.

I don´t know if while in conscious non-rem sleep is possible to hear sounds, or some faint sounds. Is it ? That would be good news for snorers, i think, because they would have a feedback sound. People only snore when they sleep ( that is, when they loose their muscular tone and throat collapses ).

Well, i have tried it sometimes, not consistently, but i've been having this intention for some time. I would like to accomplish it this year but i don´t know..i have heard that some people try for years and others just have a natural talent..

Regarding techniques, i have read some buddhist literature ( specially Allan Wallace's ) and they use some main techniques:

-->following hypnagogic imagery ( like normal wild technique i guess )

      -->meditation
1: awareness of awareness, or shamata without a sign* ( just resting on the feeling of being aware, very simple, not concerned with the senses or mind contents, just the feeling of being aware )

2: watching thoughts and mind contents ( that's close to WILD hypnagogia when one sees random flashing images but one watches passively, and it´s also close to mindfulness in terms of detachment )

-->visualization of a small white light orb at the chest centre ( heart chakra )

-->or trough lucid dreaming ( closing one's dream eyes and resting in awareness ).

      * I will probably follow this one. I find more difficult to fall asleep while watching phosphenes or hypnagogia, but this is a promising avenue. Visualizing a small light orb, the size of a pea, it´s also easy to do and fall asleep with.

I was WILDing this afternoon. After 10 minutes(seems that I WILD fast), I caught myself snoring(I was conscious, but not much, but definitely not asleep). Also, that made me realize that the thought that I got lost in was starting to forming a dialogue(I was thinking of a conversation, and I could hear it as if it were actually happening).
So, in my case, I became fully conscious, but my brother walked in to me and ruined the WILD(don't know if I lost the attempt when I became conscious either).
But interesting though, I feel that I can WILD easily, since I fall asleep very quickly usually(seconds), but I always thought that it was hard, and liked DILD because it was like the job is done for me, I just do some random exercises during the day , but not any more!

2014 is a long time, I don't know where I'll be in terms of lucid dreaming by the end of the year, but my current goals are to increase lucid dream awareness (my lucid dreams always turn into non-lucids from lack of concentration), then master some skills such as flying and getting to dream scenes that I want to get to.

I've experienced a number of these discontinuities over the last months. I think it's pretty clear that we're not actually conscious the whole time. Where could it be? It could be the time right around where the dream forms. We feel that we're conscious all the way into the dream, but perhaps it's an illusion.

      - more consistent LDs (at least 2 per week)
      - improving my prospective memory as to increase my chances of having more MILDs
      - first successful WILD and DEILD
      - completing my whole list of things to do within my LDs
      - breaching the 2,000 mark of dreams (NLDs and LDs) that I have recorded in my diaries

and most important staying motivated, being consistent and of course HAVING FUN

Shamatha without a sign is incredible, I've achieved it once, even though it didn't result in a dream, I was conscious in NREM sleep stages 2 and 3. Very difficult without weeks or even months of shamatha, seated meditation practice.

It's nice to have this thread; referring back to it, it will be easy to check up on progress during the year.

      My plan:

      1) Have 100 lucid dreams
      2) Reach an average length per LD of 4 minutes, or better, for the whole year
      3) Get a firm and detailed understanding of how my mind works during sleep and dreaming
      4) Successfully employ LDs to improve the quality of my waking reality

So ... is this the real universe, or is it just a preliminary study?

      another goal.
I want to make a dream base out of my parent's basement. :3

Sigh, couldn't get many people to post their goals.

Here is my thread I made about how I LD, not 100% everything, but the parts that really differ from the norm.

      Start sleeping well
      Become good at WILDing
Use self awareness, expectation/intention, and MILD together in a smooth DILDing way!

I'll read that thread now and place a reply, thnx!

      Another goal:
      Become good at DEILD!

      Sensei and LouaiB like this.

I made a flow chart about DILDs, anyone interested? I need to approve it first

I fill my heart with fire, with passion, passion for what makes me nostalgic. A unique perspective fuels my fire, makes me discover new passions, more nostalgia. I love it.

I'll get my hands on a high quality camera tonight, and send it to Sageous to aprove it, then I would post it, maybe in my thread "my take on LDing techniques"
