Hi Karl,
Lucid dreaming is a hobby/ability/lifestyle that practitioners build over a lifetime. Get a good book, like Stephen LaBerge's "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming," a comfortable chair, and have a good long read. Following the recommendations in LaBerge usually results in the first lucid dream for beginners within a month or so.
In short:
+ build your dream recall to the point where you can consistently remember at least one dream a night for about 7-10 days in a row
+ increase your day-time awareness by performing reality checks and critically reflecting on the notion that you could be dreaming at any conscious moment.
+ go to bed with the intention to realize that you're dreaming in the dream (become lucid).
LaBerge does in to a lot more detail about how to do these things.
