I can't really help you with WILD, but if you wanna have a DILD it boosts your chances tremendously to have it on your mind at all times!
While you can't retain the thought ALL the time you need to reach a stage of excitement where you will remind yourself of lucid dreaming and reality checking every 5 minutes or so. You don't need to reality check every single time, just the fact that lucid dreams crosses your mind and you imagine what it will be like to become lucid will help you a great deal.
Try to feel the excitement the same way a child would feel if he was told he were going to a themepark the next day. Look forward to your sleep and make it important!
Lucid dreaming is not hard. It's actually very easy. You just have to want it and think about it enough, and it will eventually happen.
Don't put it on a pedestal, your brain is your brain, and it will work in your favor if you want it to.
EDIT:
BTW: If you want some stuff to do in your first LDs, try some simple stuff like speaking and hearing your own voice, feeling different things (walls, skin, flowers, etc.), or just walk around looking at stuff.
One of my friends just had his first LD, and he spent the whole time lying under his bed licking the metal bars.
He was so surprised by the realism of the taste that he just kept on trying. xD
