For this group I would suggest something like Breakfast Club, There's Something About Mary, or even Roadhouse.

On a forum I used to belong to was a thread of the top movies everyone should see. There's probably something like that here but I haven't looked.

Pft, Equilibrium was a derivative knock off of generic sci fi thematically and The Matrix aesthetically. Really didn't like that film.

Seconding Galaxy Quest though, it's hilarious.
