Carmine and Banana got banned, don't know where Carmine is, but Banana went to MM. Delph quit and went to MM. Alex became the new owner and upgraded DV to the next vbulletin system, and implemented IRC chat. He also lowered the age limit to 13. Jeff is afk for an unspecified amount of time. The spam empire has over 100,000 posts. I have no idea where Carousoul is...maybe permabanned. Some older members are still hanging out, but I have a feeling most left when the community turned to shit.

      He is the Stig...

      Biotch.

I've been following this forum for years and I still enjoy to read up on the posts. Most people here still seem semi intellectual.

      Thank you, come again.

If you could construct a forum for Lucid Dreaming, upon what principles would you base it on, and what resources would you include?

I for one would start with a maturity level above fifth grade, and include mandatory grammar and punctuation that is at least mediocre. Gardenweb is a pleasant (albeit completely unrelated) forum where the members are courteous and there is appeal to gardeners of all ages. That sort of environment will be created in DV shortly after hell freezes over. It's not necessarily a bad thing in regards to what has been set up and established, but if you're looking to create a lucid dreaming forum from scratch, I'd think that you'd want to create a broader appeal where 75% of the members aren't in middle or high school, or if they are, it's simply because lucid dreaming appeals more to them than to any other age group. More age friendliness, more helping out of people who want to actually learn how to lucid dream.

I think the new format might have turned a lot of people off.

Peronally, I am frustrated by how rarely anybody posts in Extended Discussion and Religion/Spirituality. Also, the maturity/age level does seem to have gone down significantly, which makes less room for good intellectual discussion. The times they are a changing.

That might leave me out, however, I was looking more for focus. The purpose that the forum is to help achieve, and how it is structured to aid in that achievement.

I, myself, believe that if one does not have a vision, it is usually because one does not have vision.

The audience necessarily comes with the topic of the forum. A forum about alternate realities where you can soar through the air, hurl fireballs and passers-by, and have sex with anyone you see on the spot--well, that forum is going to attract a very different crowd than a forum about gardening.

Members come and go every month and every year, and I've heard the "what happened to our forum?!" shpeels so many times over the years that by now it's enough to make me sick. The sky has been falling for 5+ years yet we somehow still seem to be here. Get over it already.

I'm someone who periodically leaves anywhere from six months to a year at the drop of a hat. Therefore, I can agree with the sentiment that there are always a section of dissatisfied forum members who believe the present is somehow worse than anytime prior. The fact of the matter is forums have a inevitable turnover rate. Well known people will decrease in activity to be replaced by some new upstart members who steals the spotlight. This means the overall feel of the forum will shift with new personalities.

I won't say much about the new format. I like it well enough.

Peronally, I am frustrated by how rarely anybody posts in Extended Discussion and Religion/Spirituality. Also, the maturity/age level does seem to have gone down significantly, which makes less room for good intellectual discussion. The times they are a changing.
I'm gonna get hit for this from someone but I'm glad these sections have deflated. One of the primary reasons I stopped posting after a long stretch of activity wasn't because I got offended or whatnot from opposing viewpoints. Instead what appalled me about these sections was a psudo-intellectualism: people who believed that simply posting youtube and wikipedia links, rehashing the same cookie-cutter arguments for half a decade, constructing satirical posts for the sole reason of ridiculing and the infinitely large amount of personal attacks somehow made one intelligent. The fact that the sections were mind bogglingly one-sided (in the case of 2007-2008 liberal and atheist, though the opposite being true would have been equally disastrous) didn't much help to facilitate it as an intellectual powerhouse.

People will disagree. That's fine. I hated it, I felt a great deal of the participants looked like morons in their pursuit of looking smart, etc. If it comes back in force I'll probably leave again even at the expense of looking like the village idiot. ^___________^

That is all true, but it was never enough to make me want to leave. I have no problem with satire, as a lot of people seem to have. I think it is a totally legitimate and very potentially persuasive argument technique. I also use it all the time, of course. YouTube videos can be effective in certain cases, and Wikipedia has more information than any other site on the internet, though it seems to be about 98% reliable. I have run into many deep forests of pseudo-intellectualism here and plenty of unwarranted personal hostility, but that just makes debating even more fun for me. Stumping a know it all prick who doesn't actually know what he/she is talking about is much more fun than stumping a good sport who has good manners and just seems interested in the truth. I too have been very outnumbered in debates here. For several years, I was almost always the only person expressing agreement with the U.S. side of the Iraq War and recent interrogation techniques. I would sometimes be arguing with about ten people at a time, several of whom would act like complete jackasses about it. That too, though, is something that didn't make me want to leave. I saw it as a challenge and had fun with it.

Yeah, I left for a couple of months. It was just a coincidence that I actually left right as the new system was going up...I have a feeling that I am going to be one of those "on again, off again, most mostly on" members. I get bored, then I start to play a game. Really, I've always been like this with computer games, but I suppose it's different for forums. It is hard to see old people go, but I just be-friend the noobs that are intellectual, and seem like they can stay at least a few months . I did that whole "left for a few months" thing in the beginning. April-September. It will happen again, but I will never permanatly leave, I can't see that happening. I could go on and on about just that, but I'll stop there.

It is kind of annoying how the threads are getting to be so repetive, and they are ALL (80%) questions, or "hi I am new [and I will post 20 posts and then leave]". I wish that there were more threads about "how is it for YOU" in on topic. I do try to bring new stuff to the on topic section, and I am actually thinking about making a thread about questions about LDing-how it is YOU do something in a LD, something like that, not a "how do I do.." question.

As far as the layout goes, it does look a little better, to me, it just took some getting used to. It just took me about a week... It would be a dumb reason to leave DV because of THAT.
If you see a strange typo in my post, blame my iPad for that.

I do wish there was a lower turnover rate. It is very hard to pay attention to people unless they have at least a month or two under their belt (or are a raging post whore ), and by that time, they've gotten bored and left. Add that to the older members leaving, and it's no wonder the community is falling apart.

I THINK WE SHOULD HAVE A ROLL CALL OF AWESOME MEMBERS.

      I am present.

Also, judging by what I've seen, the layout and newb influx hasn't flushed out all the cool cats I know and love here. So I'll stick around, too.

I guess I'd be considered new here, one of those "upstarts", seeing as I joined back in January, but I've seen my share of people who appeared to be vets and regulars leave and that be the end of their story.

I've found that to be a turn-off for discussions too, my fear of having to deal with that was partly why I never looked into ED in the first place. I'll go see what I can talk about intelligently over there.

Agreed - those things happen to me too, but mostly with real-life stuff. I get going on a board or a site (DV, the Luminarium's boards, another little board I'm on called the Cool Zone/CZ, dA back in the old days of v4/5), at the expense of my activity on another site or activity offline. But, I come back eventually. I left DV once there for a bit, now I'm back again, just talking with the locals.
      DV Dictionary. / Verious: a definition. /

I'm not on DV much these days, but I'll try to toss a cool dream or two into my DJ.
