Thread: McDonalds Beating

Yeah, I was just talking about a similar topic with some people at the rec center: should gay men be allowed to change in the mens locker room? These guys I was talking to said no, they should make 4 locker rooms, straight women, straight men, gay men, gay women. This was all sparked because these guys think one of the lifeguards is gay and looks at them when they change while he walks through. I think it's kind of ridiculous; people are just insecure abuot their bodies and their sexuality. It's funny how some macho chauvanistic guys are afraid of being/turning gay. Seperating men and women makes some sense, to protect women form rape.

But there's a lot that's interesting about this. It may be obvious to anyone with any kind of compassion that this is "wrong", that people should have done something. But it's very interesting to think about why they didn't. What is it about our culture that creates this attitude towards violence. That it's not just ok or a part of life, but it's funny. Someone being beaten is funny. America is fucked up. Not the Carlin video I was looking for but still somewhat relevent.

We have a culture that is aggressive, it promotes aggresion. It promotes cutting someone else down in order to raise oneself up. This leads to physical violence ineveitably, it always will, like how 2+2 will always make 4. We do not have to live this way but don't ask me how we go about changing this on a large scale. The only thing I can think of is education and open discussion. But there are so many negative forces feeding back into each other at the moment that it really seems we may be fucked.
