Is it common for people to dream of their death?

I find it quite strange and scary, is it normal and common?

Obviously it's scary if you experience your own death! I had it as a kid, but I wake up before dying in that case.

Moved this to General Dream Discussion as this probably has more to do with non-lucids than lucids.

I dream of my death quite a bit, but not in different ways than simply "dying" and being in a void. That's happened a few times, but in the past year I've had more of being trapped in a watery coffin, unable to move or breathe because I was dead, along with dying from being stabbed by a knife, having wire strung through me because I was killed by invisible forces, etc.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I used to dream about me dying when I was younger (ages 1-10). Someone always murdered me though, it wasn't like I watched myself have cancer or something.

Thanks Puffin, I didn't know what category to put it in it's not me that's been having these dreams, it's two of my friends. I thought "that's strange, I wonder if it's quite a common thing". It just so happens one of them is a natural lucid dreamer as well. Does anybody know why people often dream of their death?

      Yeah, no problem!

I know many people who've dreamed of dying. My theory is that it has something to do with our natural sense of self-preservation, and although we're no longer in danger from predators and other things, our minds might have evolved to occasionally give us nightmares to keep us on our feet. Wild guess, though.

So you mean a bit like a possum? (I think that's the animal that pretends it's dead to protect itself). Well it makes sense Maybe someone could ask their dreamguide next time they see them?

I recently had a spurt in death dreams. I wouldn't say they're "fun" but they aren't bad either. Most times that I die I fade into blackness, losing my vision. The emotional feeling of the situation is inexplicable. Losing everything in a single pitiless moment. It's beautiful.

I dream of dying and my death quite often. I always have (even at a young age). I've had dreams of "after death" (which is quite odd for me - an atheist), too. In which I'll either be a ghost, or on the path to "what comes next" (dream always ends before I get to "next"). It's quite scary for me, personally. I must admit, it's probably on my list of least favorite things to experience in a dream. Usually, I'll wonder if I'm dreaming when it happens and I think it may be a defense mechanism when I do.

I've died in my dreams more times than I can count. D:
But I've noticed I usually get them when I'm stressed. Like when I have tests or a projects due, or I've done something stupid and keep worrying about it.

The only time I can remember dying is from drowning...
But it was a dragon that drowned me...

Not sure if that has much to do with self preservations or reminding me to be on my feet.
But I guess if I did see a dragon I would try avoid bridges

Yeah, I know. =/ My dreams can become pretty messed up sometimes though, and produce scenarios that I'd never even want to think about.

Yes I think so - because of our desire to survive, even the tiniest fears we have about something can potentially be manifested in the worst possible scenario - ie. death.
Deathly dreams are quite enlightening experiences because they can provide insight into things (perhaps hazards or dangers) in a very unique way.

I once saw a video posted by ReeceJones87 he posted a clip of a guy who dreamed of his own death and posted a
video about it on You Tube and several months later he actually died in similar circumstances.
I have searched several times for this clip since I saw it but have been unable to find it again.
I would be grateful if someone could post it if they know of it.

Once I dreamed that I got shoot in London. I felt how my chest became warm, it's was very vivid. But it didn't hurted.

The most of the time, I'm dreaming about, that I almost die. Like once, I dreamed that I was going to fly, and then we didn't reach the plane. We went home, and then we saw in the news, that the plane was crashed. Not nice.

I often get murdered in my dreams. It isn't fun, but I just wake up after "dying" It's just that moment of "I'm going to die!?" and freaking out that bothers me.

I've only died once in a dream, although I recall a dream when I was sentenced to death, but I ran away Anyway, when I actually died the weirdest thing happened. I was at my old school, and everyone was on the playground, running around with knives, I had one too, and me and my friend were waiting at the top of the playground, out of the action. We were discussing plans to get out (My friend explaining how to build a jetpack), when suddenly my friend stopped talking. He turned to me, said In a menacing sort of way 'Feel My Toilet!' And stabbed me four times. There was no actual pain, just a dull ache that started In the areas where I had been stabbed, and spread all over my body. Even when I woke up these areas were really achey and sore.
Soooo, what I want to know is: Does anyone have any idea what 'Feel My Toilet!' means. Or: Has anyone ever been injured in a dream and aching followed them even when they'd woken up?
