      Music in dreams

Didn't see a General Dream Discussion. Hope I hit the right place.

There has been a mystery in the back of my mind, from as far back as I can remember. When I am in that cruising REM, where you are aware, but not aware that you are aware. Some of you know what I'm talking about.

I will lay for hours and listen to music. This music is unlike anything I have ever heard outside of my dreams. It seems as if it is almost infinitely complex, thousands and thousands of instruments that don't exist coming together to create, reinforce, and dance around a centralized melody, all perfectly orchestrated. Sometimes, as I am waking up, I catch just a few seconds of lucidity in that state. It is in this way that I have been able to determine these things, and that there are, in fact, multiple songs. Each of these songs is complete with different instruments, and different interactions between them, and of course different melodies.

It is the most beautiful music I have ever heard in my life, and I think that only a thousand instruments, or a computer, could pull it off.

...so... I don't suppose any of you have heard something like this?

I have experienced some music in lucid dream a few times, one time it was weird simple rhythm, another time it was some epic orchestral music, haven't experienced such complex music though.

It's pretty rare. Happens, maybe, a couple of times a year.

At times during my dreams I can hear music , nothing Ive heard in real life that have blown my mind . Maybe a couple of times when I wake up I can remember them and hum what Ive heard.
If only I could record them somehow.

I've tried explaining how heart-breakingly beautiful the music can be in dreams to people and it is truly something that you must experience yourself. I fancy myself a composer of sorts and it's amazing how writer's block affects music as well - unfortunately I have never come close to composing something that is as emotionally enveloping as dream music. Once I was dreaming that I was walking up a white staircase with landings every twenty or so steps and at the landing there was a window looking out into a blue sky with white clouds. I am looking out of the window when I start hearing some music that sounds like it is coming from a pipe organ very far below me. It takes me just a moment to realize that it is something that I wrote a long time ago and it is astonishing how rich and full the dream embellished the piece. It's almost as if my whole brain is unlocked to creating music and is perfect in its creation. I wonder if this is how savants perceive music? I think that the next time I dream, I should try to locate a piano or a guitar or even some instrument that doesn't exist and should try to play it. I henceforth challenge everyone else who reads this to do so! I am sure the results will be absolutely surprising. Keep listening!

interesting experience Sloth. Something I might look for in an LD. Just try and find "Perfect music".

I often hear songs in LDs or in non lucids. It is normally a song that I know very well and sounds perfectly accurate, and it has gone on up to a minute after waking up, even after a few non lucids.

I enjoy spontaneously hearing music or singing songs during dreams (non-ld as well as ld), as the whole experience is much more magnified than in real life.

However, I cannot recall anything as impressive as the music you are describing. I wonder if it would be possible to invite it back during an LD. Have you tried this, since you know what sound to expect?

Oh wow that sounds amazing, sloth. I've never heard it though, sadly. But now that you mentioned it, it might happen just because I heard about it!

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.

Last night my violin teacher played a piece for me I recognised it in the dream but I don't think I ever heard it in the material word. It wasn't as epic as Sloth and Sloth Face described but it made my eyes a little moist (instead of the usual ) And about 10 days ago I was playing the second movement of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto, I think I was pretty good

Alas I have never experienced this. However if it is as amazing and as perfect as you say then you've left me no choice but to look up some music in tonights LD, can't wait to hear what my brain sounds like

I would love to hear music like that. I guess, in dreams we can experience the essense of music. Not just a reflection of it, as we experience it with our limited capability in waking life.

Great topic and interesting experiences you have! I recently woke up remembering what I would describe as a very old country song maybe 50's? I don't listen to country or remember hearing this song and I am not from that era. I remembered the tune and the lyrics "Well if I had to hurt you Susan, at least let me wipe away the tears" I spent a good while searching the internet and youtube to see if it was a real song..no luck. I was thinking it might have been a song heard at my grandfather's house 30 or so years ago because I recently woke up to the words "deus ex machina" didn't immediately recognize the term so I researched and remembered it might also be the title of an episode of Lost. I found it was an episode I watched several years ago. There might have been a dream in that episode?

I find Sloth's experience extremely interesting. Has anyone else had such intricate music? Also, does anyone remember any dreams that featured something that actually happened to them decades ago? I am not sure if that is what happened in my music dream.

I've experienced euphoria waking from a lucid 3 times in my life.
One of the times was precisely what you are describing.

The absolute most complicated and beautiful music imaginable(to me). I cannot remember the music, only the experience of it.

I often reflect on this one, wanting to produce it again...
