Dd I just have my FIRST lucid dream????????????

Last night (in real life) after going to bed, we received a late night phone call. After going back to bed and reciting my mantra ďI will have a lucid dream tonightĒ I had the following experience, which Iím not at all sure how to categorize. Did I just have my first (albeit short) lucid dream??

In my dream I had yet to fall asleep after the phone call, when I grew concerned that my wife had shut off the wall switch that controlled the power to my bedside lamp. I tested this by pushing the switch on the lamp several times (without getting out of bed) and indeed, it did not come on. This meant that if I needed to wake and write in my dream journal later on in the night or morning, Iíd have to get out of bed THEN, to turn the wall switch on, which I did not want to do. So, in my dream I got out of bed and flipped the wall switch to ďONĒ. The bedside lamp did not come on...but this was possible because I wasnít sure how many times Iíd flipped the switch on the lamp. All of this felt totally REAL. Hyper-real, in fact.

As I made my way back to bed in our master bedroom in the dark by habit and feel, I started to sense a growing anxiety about being in our bedroom in the dark. I tried to turn the bedside lamp on, but it wouldnít come on even though I had just assured myself it SHOULD come on because the wall switch power was definitely ON. I was trapped in the dark, and in my dream I started to get anxious. I started to feel like there was something wrong...something amiss...but I couldnít put my finger on it. I desperately wanted the light to come on, but had exhausted all possible remedies and didnít know what to do next.

As the anxiety grew over the malfunctioning light, I had the realization...Iím DREAMING. This is a DREAM. Thatís why the light switches donít work! And of course...I woke up for real.

So...was this a lucid dream??? The subjective difference I would describe as follows: My non-lucid dreams are like watching a play or a movie. Last nightís experience was like BEING AN ACTOR IN THE MOVIE OR THE PLAY.

So, was this my first actual LD????? Opinions??

Yes, you made the realization that you were dreaming while being in a dream. That is the definition of lucid dreaming! Congratulations!

Yep. The hyper reality (in my experience) shows you either had an LD or were very very close. In your case you realized it, so it's an LD. Way to go!

Thanks for the responses and confirmation(s). I was a little concerned this was simply a "false awakening". Too bad I panicked/got excited and blew it after only 45 or so seconds. Oh, well. It's certainly represents progress for me! Too bad my first LD had to involve an element of fear/anxiety. I was really hoping for some floating, flying, or passing through walls.

I'm up to recording three dreams per night in my dream journal (some of which I have posted to this forum) which I have been pretty diligent about keeping, and I've been reading and following the advice on this forum quite diligently, so I must say this: I couldn't have done it without the DreamViews forum and member contributions. My thanks to all.

      NyxCC, OpheliaBlue:

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, but even more than that, thank you for creating and maintaining such a fine resource for those who wish to attempt lucid dreaming. I feel so blessed that I stumbled upon this forum. The congratulations really belong to the members of this forum, without whose time and effort at setting down their techniques and tips, I never would have enjoyed any progress in my quest to first experience (and now, develop) the capacity to lucid dream.

As a new member and with little to offer even the other new members such as myself, I find myself in the uncomfortable (for me, anyway) position of receiving, without the ability to give back. If there is any value to my membership at present, perhaps it would be that those who come to this forum with the desire to LD be advised and assured that those of advanced years (I'm soon to be 61 years old) STILL have every opportunity to accomplish abilities they never dreamed of (no pun intended) even at such a late stage in life. I am unaware if age has any known bearing on the ability to lucid dream. I would, however, hold myself out as an example of the proposition that it does not.

If that has any value, or can, in the present or future be of some consolation, support, or encouragement to persons my age who come to this forum, then, by all means, point them to this thread and give them every assurance that if they employ the techniques set out at Dream Views, they too will succeed, without a doubt. Apparently, advanced age is not an absolute bar to lucid dreaming. Perhaps it is not even a relative bar.

      Warmest regards,

      Frank

But you ARE giving back, Frank. Just by being here and posting your experiences. As you say, people will read that and get inspired and motivated. So thank you for being here and participating.

Best thing anybody can do is read and post. Everytime you do, you mind goes "whoa, that's cool, I wanna do that, I WILL do that".

And thank you for your kind words about the forum. We pride ourselves on being friendly and helpful, so it's good to hear that whatever we doing is working. So have fun, and PM anybody from staff with any questions. Happy dreams

Any dream where you realise your dreaming is a lucid dream, it don't matter how short or vivid it is. Or if you can control it or not. All that matters is if you realise your dreaming.

So congrats on your first lucid! Now you might try looking at how you can Stabilize a dream or how to control it!

Sheldon: No, the X-men were named for the X in Charles Xavier. Since I am Sheldon Cooper, you will be, my C-men.
